odometer and Trip OD W126 85 300SD

Is there a good article on how to fix OD and trip OD? I pulled the Dash and am looking at a broken driver gear for the Odometer.

2 Questions...

1.) is there a good source to get this gear and repair?

2.) Can I take a cluster from another MB W126 (420,560) and use it in its place?

Thanks

Search is your friend....

www.odometergears.com

Do yourself a favor and replace all three gears. You can replace the entire cluster, but it must be out of another 85 because of the shorter rear-end gears than the earlier 126s. Not sure about diesel/gasser compatibility.

To be safe, either replace your gears (~$65) or find another 85 diesel cluster.

Your first thread wasn`t closed. Roy gave you a list of links for the spedo`s.

odometer and Trip OD W126 85 300SD

your 85 has the 2:88 differential, used for that one yr only.
81 to 84 SD used the 3:07 Diff. the spedometers are geared to the differential.

tiny quibble about the gearing, it's referred as taller, with smaller numerical gearing...
it makes the engine see the terrain as taller with a smaller gear ration in the differential.

Go to Parts Yard, pull any speedo out of a 2.88. You will be saving money and time. You can take a toothpock and spin the numbers to match your current cluster.

there are awesome writeups with pics on how to repair it yourself, but with all the gold just sitting in parts yards...I dunno...to each his own. My cluster was all "rusted"...corroded, I don't know...It took forever to get all that gunk out of the cluster frame.

theres an 85 at the winston salem pull a part right now.

(put at least a 100 mile approximation of your location in your sig or title line...that will help with weather, junkyard, and local Peach members related questions"

Yes went to pull a part and pulled the cluser (for lights and temp guage) Those things work but as later post indicated, That OD and Trip OD are not working either.

Thayer, while it's a good idea to have better condition parts, the odo problem with the SD is not one of them to try to get used. replacement gears need to be installed. EVERY single SD I've ever worked on had rotted gears in the odo... all of them.
the material that MB used in the gears is VERY VERY soft, and it just crumbles after a few years. the replacement gears are a different harder material. they make noise when replaced, so coat them with some plastic lubricant before installation.

The post in this link: Instrument cluster, Odometer, Speedometer, Tachometer links
Instrument cluster, Odometer, Speedometer, Tachometer links is great.
I would like to know if it aply for the W126 300 1982 300 SD since this car DOES NOT use a cable for speedometer and odometer.
Thanks for your help

Appears that included link is abbreviated...Not sure which article it was referring to. My issue is with the gears and will most likely get a set from odometergears.com. Agree with previous post, every 300SD cluster I have pulled seems to have a gear disintegration issue, best to spent the $65 and be done with it.
