That was one very nice station owner! (Certainly it must have been a nice local station where owners and customers shared conversations....) Around here it would be hard for me to believe in something like that happening.

I once worked with a bloke who insisted that adding a little diesel to his petrol was the best way of "quietening it down"...
Make of that what you will! He used to get really pissed off with pump attendants who would give him a hard time as he would almost fill his tank with petrol and then add in an extra litre of diesel on top... (I don't recommend doing this!)

Army, Where in the Netherlands ? I had some very good friends that used to work at their Embassy here in Washington D.C. We all had some great times
hanging out. I also spent time in the Netherlands when I worked in the Airline industry. I remember having my first really fresh Heineken right at the brewery. Wow !

I used to run about 10% diesel in my F250 as it was the only way I could reduce the pinging. It was a 300 inline six quite thoroughly modified with slightly over 10:1 compression. I ran an HEI distributor with about a .06" spark plug gap so it probably would have run on straight Kerosene, but it ran quite well with that mix. I beat on it hard enough that I didn't have to worry about carbon buildup.

Diesel everywhere
My son got a job clearing a badly overgrown yard in our neighborhood. He naturally took the nearest can with him not wanting to spend his hard earned money on gas. He worked all day on this and after returning home he complained that the lawnmower had gotten progressively harder and harder to start. At the end of the day it required at least 40-50 pulls to start and smoked like hell. I had to flush the tank and run a couple of of gallons through it before it would run at all. It never did run well after that, always smoked. My son has learned that all cans in the garage probably contain diesel or biodiesel so he doesn't steal them to put in his gas Jeep or motorcycle. I wouldn't have believed that you could run a gas lawnmower on 100% diesel. I now have a cordless electric lawnmower (free off Craigslist). Cheers Dan

By adding the diesel are you just reducing the octane level of the petrol? Is that the trick?

It increases the flash point of the fuel, making it less susceptible to being ignited by hot spots in the combustion chamber. It's a similar effect to increasing the octane. Most stock distributor type ignitions can't light this mix off reliably, but distributorless, coil on plug and aftermarket multi spark/HEI systems can ignite it, especially with a larger plug gap to catch more fuel.

Kerosene has less BTUs, less energy than diesel fuel. Mercedes through the early '90s anyway, would allow up to 50% kerosene in #2 diesel for a winter mix. Less power and less fuel mileage, but it will run.

Typical I got it the wrong way round - higher octane stops pinking or course - doh.
I found this information regarding the mixture of diesel and petrol that might be interesting:- http://www.turbodieselregister.com/mixing_gasoline_and_diesel.htm http://alternativefuels.about.com/od/researchdevelopment/a/cetane.htm Also talks about the cetane value being inversely proportional to octane so if you add diesel to petrol to quieten the engine use a lower cetane numbered diesel.
