New here & new to me 300D

I'm rather new to this forum, been lurking for a few weeks.

I just got myself an 83"300D. Every time I searched google for an issue with it has brought me back to this place. I wanted to say thanks to the mod. & admin. team along with everybody that has contributed to the tech here. This forum is awsome! Very well organized & well thought out.

Items I have fixed (with the knowledge from here)

tach.~ It needed the amplifier then the amp. needed a piece of folded paper.
Transmission shifting on the 722.315~
Dash lights~ Potentiometer needed rebuilding & dielectric jelly.

This weekend I plan to build an injection pop tester (got that info here too) & install the monark nozzles. After that will be rebuilding the turbo.

Welcome to the forum.

May I ask why you intend to rebuild the turbo? is it whining? have chunks fallen out of it?

On the Turbocharger I have yet to see a thread anywhere that actually deals with a complete rebuild of the Turbocharger.
There are articles where they just replace the stock Bearings and new Seals and sometimes a rebalancing of the Wheels.

The only thread that has ever spoken of bearing clearances at all was a person who found out his Turbo Bearing Housing had been bored to take oversized Bearings.

On one of the rebuild threads the guy just tightened the Shaft Nut with no attempt to Torque.

If any one knows what the Shaft Nut Torque is supposed to be or the Bearing clearances, end and side play specs please pass the info on to me.

I pulled the air cleaner off to inspect the shaft play & found the turbo is a bit stiff to spin. I assume that it is gummed up with carbon, I guess I could just clean it out. But if I am going to remove it to clean it, it's getting rebuilt. Weather I do it or I send it to turbo exchange in Concord NC. I had them do my Power stroke & I was very happy with their work.

I think I'll be hanging out here a lot, don't know about another MB though. Between this one & my 48' willys I have enough projects.

I'll get my profile filled out in the next few days & post some pic's of my toys.

... lemme know if you are close to charlotte!
the turbo may feel stiff because the motor is not running. it's got a sleeve bearing. Oil pressure gives it a film to ride on, that's normal.
unless you cannot turn it at all, a good test with the motor OFF is, pull it in and out, then up and down, and check for play.

I'm in Vale, in Lincoln county. I know Mt. Holly fairly well.

There was no end or vertical play. The Garrett t3 turbos on the cat. engines here at work spin freely & so does the turbo on my PSD. All the kubota turbos have no restiance. The om617 has approx. 280K & I dought the turbo has ever been serviced. I know the injectors weren't. I did however see the service records, has had consistant service oil changes since 1991. I am the third owner.

if you can bring it down to my shop we can compare yours to some of mine. or I could meet up with you sometime, and we can check out the one I drive. it's possible the other turbo's you are comparing it to have roller bearings. I know the turbo's on these cars do not freespin. but you should not have difficulty turning them with your fingers from the center bolt.
is there oil on the impeller? in the Utube?

Thanks, We may be able to do just that.

The turbos that I am refering to are all of a bushing design none are ball bearing.

The oil in & on it is from blowby.

When I get it pulled in a few weeks I'll post some pic's of my findings. Right now a friend is helping me do some of the work as I am in recovery from rotator cuff surgery. I really hate loosing the use of my shoulder...
