I'd find the used parts. No more than 30min to pull parts off at the junkyard.

Where are you in AZ? I'm going there next month for a family reunion, and I have a pre 85 intake and exhaust manifold under the work bench. If you wanna go that route.

If you go to the junk yard look for a 78 or 79 SD without the EGR.

I'm not sure. I've worked very little with the 85 CA cars. I did cut a trap ox out for Jeremy one time. I know the flange on the trap is the same as the standard exhaust manifold. so the turbo will bolt up. If you were to swap to the pre 85 manifolds you would need to clock the turbo, and get new oil return tube, maybe a new feed line (the old one may be bent to work).

I'm about 90% sure the 85 turbo would work, but I'd have to look at an 85 in more detail to know for sure.

I have the whole turbo, manifold assembly, sadly the turbo leaks like horribly, and looks like it was stored in a tidal pool. I got it from the bay area, very rusty.

Hatteras, as much as I wish I could afford 400 dollars of parts, I just can't. I am currently living on part time wages and student loans, so 400 dollars is a lot of money for parts I don't actually "need". I will have to check out the junk yards.

SirNik, I am in Phoenix, thanks for the offer, let me think about it though, not sure if I am gonna drop in a replacement pipe or a federal system. The federal system may be cheaper, but it needs more labor.

The 85 CA turbo will work, you are right, you do have to clock it though to fit the federal.

I will take a pic of the 85 turbo when I get my car back.

There's a guide floating around somewhere were a guy converted his car from california to federal. The Cali turbo wouldn't fit. I can't remember why. He tried clocking it but it still didn't line up right I think.

I clicked on the link from monstercraftsman that was posted earlier in this thread. Anyone know him? Do his pics look familiar?

The turbo is the same but the fittings attached to it are '85 only.
Get your car out of there any way you can!
Tow it away if need be. This will not end well for you if you leave it.
They are bullsh**ting you. I had an '85 CD and the job was done at no charge to me. They even dropped me home and picked me up!
The service manager at the dealer does not want to do the paperwork and get reimbursed from the factory, or maybe he thinks he won't.
They are pulling your leg.

I rarely find myself in agreement with Haterasguy but... I remember clearly a few years back the word on another list was that this recall was no longer being honoured by dealers. If that was wrong, or if something changed, it's great news.

I seem to recall that some cars got new heads and new turbos out of this. Though I know $400 isn't spare change, it seems to me that arguing too much qualifies as looking the gift horse in the mouth.... I'd suggest you look for the path of least resistance.

I do agree with the comment about inside communications. I've seen myself that there are times when the guys with ties out front at the desk might as well be located on another continent from the guys who get greasy.

I hate bad dealers. Volvo and VW take the cake there, however, with Chrysler in hot pursuit.

My MBz dealer parts guys recognize my voice on the phone, take the time to look up obscure ***** for my cars, and I get shop discount at the counter. Of course the manager came from one of Canada's few small-town Mercedes dealers (now defunct).

Good luck with it.

After personally calling a few yards in my area and talking to a friend with 2 w123's in town, I called the shop today. They had also been looking for parts, but had as much luck as I did. They gave me a substantial discount and I am hopefully picking my car up Tuesday.

Sucks that I had to shell out the cash to fix it but what else could I do, I can't borrow my roommates car for much longer, it's rude to ask to use it daily.

Turbo checked out fine too

All dealers should still honor this, if they don't contact MBUSA, they will set them straight. Make sure you confirm that it will not need any extra parts, however....

I looked up the costs of the parts at another parts place they are listed in red:

617 142 0264 pipe, egr $276 ($207)

617 142 0240 bracket $65.03 ($31.88)

617 997 0190 clamp x2 $33.55 ($13.08)

000933007019 screws x2 $4.62 ($1.50)

If $50 or more is spent ground shipping is free.

I would not expect the Dealer fix what a prior owner damaged for free since grinding off Welds is not part of the recall.

I agree with that statement as well. The recall would be to do the work based on an unmodified car with the correct factory parts installed. If parts are needed to correct previous DIY repair work and get the car back to original before the work can be performed, that would be at an additional cost to the owner. The dealer was likely quoting the repair based on this during the inspection, and did not see the DIY repairs that had been done. I'd say the dealer is doing you a favor by giving you a substantial discount, probably giving you their cost on the parts.
