flying blinker stalk cap wiper washer switch

When activating the blinkers before making a left turn, the end of the stalk (black plastic cap with white arrows) popped off. Nothing appears broken. Anyone has reassembly experience or diagrams/pics? The first pic shows parts I found on the floor. Any parts missing? When i try to assemble it I don't get the springy effect to activate the "one squirt 4 wipes" function even though i put the spring in.

Never a dull moment in MB relic decay.

Yes, it's for the '85 SD. The EPC shows the w123 and w126 switch with the same part # but i can't in good conscience accept your generous offer and have you run the risk ruining a perfectly good stalk.

josha37 Yes, just went out to try it your way to make sure. After trying it with the white contact switch first- which immediately triggered the washer.

The problem is that the reassembled stalk somehow lost the spring action to activate the washer. Nothing wrong with the washer, the wipers or the blinkers.

spring first, then white piece (small end first), then cover... Is that the way you did it?

it looks like the black base around the stalk end needs to be set into the stalk first... perhaps a ring is missing.

Checked carpet again (even the map compartment on door in case a part had flown in there) -nothing. Coming to think it, your point did however remind me what the assembly looked like when it first came apart - the switch cover (with the diagrams on it) was left dangling at the bottom of the stalk. I have reproduced this condition for the attached pic.

Something must have finally worn out after 26 years of manipulation allowing the spring to shoot the cap off the stalk. I don't think something broke. I didn't apply any excessive force to turn on blinkers when it happened.

Surely there must be someone else out there who had this happen?

relief

vstech-
Brilliant! Just blindly followed your instructions and it worked! A priceless resource indeed this site. Was already agonizing at the prospect of steering wheel removal and stalk replacement

Thanks for delving into it and producing the detailed instructions. If it comes off again it might mean that the plastic ridges or whatever it is holding the cap on have deteriorated with time. Seems to be fine for now - employing extra gentle care when using any of the geriatric brittle switches on our senior cars is well advised.

Never a dull moment in MB relic decay relief

OK.
look at the bottom of the internal section that turns for Delay speed. see the little bump? you have to align the black cover with it, and pull it all the way home.
then put the washer spray section back in!
easy!

OK, it's a little more complicated...
the VERY lowest section of the switch has a single indent. that lines up with the end of the black cover. make sure your cover is on 0 then align the two black halves together and it should slide into position.
also the black cap has a keyway. it'll only go on one way, but it lines up so the arrows for direction line up with the arrow for washer use.

however, yours came off without the use of tools, verify both the cap and the cover are intact!
Now all we need is pictures.

his picture is great. and once the tabs are aligned it just falls into place. NO PRESSURE NEEDED! if you are forcing anything, it's not lined up with something.
and there is nothing else to the switch. it's extremely simple!
strike that... there is a pin through the body of the end switch. does your have to pin? I'll see if I can see it in the pictures you've posted.
