It's not worth much if you can't drive it on the streets.

It somehow made it past customs. That's the hard part. While the California DMV might be finicky about registering it, I believe some other states (Nevada comes to mind) aren't as picky and would probably register it as long as you can prove you're the rightful owner.

It's not the DMV that will come after you, it's the DOT. If they find that car they will take it from you.

It may have come into the country with a tourist. They used it for as long as they could without having to register locally so now times up. Looks like its not worth it to them to take back to their home land. I am sure there would be some dishonest way to have it on the road. Maybe registration in Canada or Mexico?

In MI the hardest part would be getting insurance. Once you had that I bet you could get tags. Almost makes me want to get the VIN from the seller and call the cut rate insurance place down the street.

No can do in Canada.
The Registrar of Imported Vehicles www.riv.ca would never approve entry.
This is a prohibited entry vehicle.

Agree it looks nice.

I thought you could bring a car older then 15 years into Canada without modification?

I am planning on shipping my diesel coach to Spain, cruising over to meet it, then tour several countries over the better part of one year. The thought has occured to me that it might be a good idea costwise, to resell it in Europe, instead of paying to ship it back to the States. Being a diesel, it would necessarily fit in the culture of diesel fuel in the Continent. I will have to make more inquiries before making any plans outside of what I already know. The shipping one-way is quite reasonable at $5K the last time I checked.

Yes, but even if it was manufactured in 1999 with a 2000 model year designation you are years short of being able to import it.

Getting a clean title in the USA is easy. Insurance with the European VIN may be much more difficult and DOT will seize and crush it as soon as they find it. You will not be happy!

PS The M3 came out of Atlanta and was legally imported and I have also imported legally from Japan so I have a good idea as to what you can "get away with" and what you can't.

NO WAY for this 2000 for now!

There's got to be a licensed importer somewhere who can modify the car enough to meet American standards. It's done on all sorts of stuff. Only thing for it is to find a registered importer and ask if there's anything they can do on that particular model.
