How about using a wire hanger bent into the shape of a hook and feeding it in through the oil drain to fish it out. If you remove the side cover you'll get more light. Just a couple of ideas. I don't think you can drop the oil pan with the engine in place.

You cannot remove the oil pan without lifting the engine. But, you would not need to remove the oil pan. You just need to drop it enough to see under the oil pick-up. Dropping it 3/8" would be plenty, if the side cover was off, to see if it was under the pick-up and to pull it out.

Something to consider at your next oil change.

Read back and you'll see that he has already been into the pan.

GregMN and others - thanks, interesting comments. I've done a great deal of magnet work through the side access panel around the oil uptake tube. I found most of the 11 bearings in and around that area. There isn't much more I can reasonably do. I've had some strong magnets in there and it doesn't appear to be there or it's really jammed into that suction tube.

I'm not too inclined to do much more other than maybe some more magnet searching at the next oil change and possibly the big magnet epoxied to the underside of the oil pan (I like that idea, just seems like a good insurance policy in general).

However, I am wondering is the screen on the oil sump removable without dropping the pan? If so, what is the trick to getting this off (or even if the pan is dropped until it hits the cross member just to get a little room below the sump - what is the screen removal procedure meaning does it clip or screw on etc?). I also need to think about causing more problems by trying to keep fixing this. I have a history of fixing things until they really break.

babymog - THanks, great picture of the bottom of the motor. I have been wondering what I've actually been reaching around in. It's not that clear to me just reaching into the side panel from underneath with the car only jacked up a few inches to access that. The pic is great. Got any more of the timing chain exposed and the timer gear, cam, crank etc or the front side of that oil pump and chain drive/gear from the front view? It would be great to have and these are hard to find by just searching. Thanks again, that really helps my minds eye anyway!

I didn't take any front fews with the covers off, Dave/GSXR had that pretty well covered on his site: http://www.w124performance.com/images/OM603_timing_cover/front_view1.jpg I hope it's okay to link to it, some great photos there.

Update: To remind the readers, I found 11 of the 12 missing ball bearings during the replacement and oil pan clean out. I ran it nearly an entire oil change cycle (4500 miles since the above work) and was doing another oil change this weekend so I decided to do the 300D as well. I pulled the plug and what did I see - ball bearing #12!!! That's a bit of a load off my mind. Also, there was a few shavings on the plug but very little considering what happened. Anyway, just updating and would suggest everyone put in a magnetic drain plug, I can't see any downside and they are a couple bucks at your FLAPS.

That is better use of your luck than buying a lottery ticket.

Finding the 12th is better than finding the 12th and 13th
