The 71 series at least in boats are fantastic motors. Loud as hell and smoke like crazy, but they will run a long, long time.


I had a Hat 53 MY smoke me out of the cockpit of a Swan with the same engine in that hot rod, except it was the turbo version, 12v-71TI. The engine in this hot rod is the gutless 500hp version, in boats they can put out so much more...

Thats how they came from the factory, they won't run without forced induction. Its a 2 stroke diesel, not a 4.

They also turbo and intercooled them to get more power out of them, 800-1000 if I remember correctly.

It may last a long time, but a fantastic motor would be a durable one that is quiet and runs clean. Loud and smokey is far from fantastic. Like the new volvo (and Mercedes) truck diesels....man....they have a large bulldozer (large!) that is a volvo....that thing is as quiet as our cars if not quieter....especially at idle. Compared to CAT's and other construction equipment, its amazingly quiet and precise sounding.

Well you can't compare 1960/70's technoligy to today's. Firstly again its a 2 stroke diesel, its quite a different animal than a 4 stroke. A modern electronic Cat or Cummins would be far quiter. For its time the old 71 series was quite good. They ran a long time, and put out a lot of power for their fuel consumption.

All new construction equipment is rather nice to operate. Depending on what your buying Volvo, Cat, or John Deere are the best.

yes... it was part of the 1960's Altered look he was going for. Since they were open with the engine off, I bet they are fixed in position.
