So my friend drove my car and ran it out of oil and the turbo went out and I think the engine was damaged but im not sure yet. The car still starts but will Not rev past 2,000 RPM if the accelerator is pressed more the car starts to die out. I think this is because the fuel air mixture is incorrect...

any insight would be appreciated!

It could be that the turbo failed and is not spinning, hindering the amount of air the engine can get. You need to check and see if the turbo is frozen or is still spinning. With the engine off, remove the U-tube and see if you can turn the turbo by hand.
How did it run out of oil? Broken cooler line? Broken turbo oil line? How far/long was it driven with no oil?

I should add that the turbo is already out of the car the shaft was broken so it didn't spin just the exhaust spun and made a horrible noise. basically the car stopped running on the freeway and we had to pull over and push it to the gas station. so it was on the road for only like a mile and a half it just lost power and then stalled

I'm confused - are you saying you were running the car with a broken turbo shaft - or the shaft broke when you ran out of oil?

Regardless of my confusion - do you by any chance have oil dripping out of the exhaust / into the exhaust ('cos that might have been where it has gone)

the turbo had to have broken while driving and when it broke the engine stalled the engine was leaking oil through the turbo oil line where it plugs into the oil pan the black plastic gasket was really old and couldn't seal it.

It sounds to me as if the engine lacked oil long enough for the turbo shaft to break. Is that correct? Or did the turbo oil feed fail? If the former, the prognosis is not good for the rest of the engine. Do you have any rod knocks?

My car was extremely sluggish above 2500 with a very small exhaust leak before the turbo. I would say the the fuel curve will require the air from the turbo for it to perform properly. With that said check for other damage as well. What is you oil pressure now? Have you changed the oil? Is there metal flakes in the oil?

there is oil in it now but it lost all the oil and the turbo broke which dumped all the oil into the engine so that may have helped save it it made a screaching sound for a second it could have been a belt though because i just replaced the alternator other than that its just fine it was slightly hard to get it to turn over at first but it starts right up now

Quite the contrary. Oil being dumped unregulated into the engine can cause a runaway engine where the engine is burning fuel uncontrollably.

Watch that oil pressure gauge every time you look at the speedometer and check your oil regularly!

The lack of turbo won't stop it from going above 2000rpm. Something else is damaged... possibly bearings (screeching).

yeah this engine with the turbo goes up to 3500 rpm and makes screaching and knocking sounds at idle its F.U.B.A.R.

very sad story..

next time make sure you do your pre trip inspection. At least check the oil.

I think this is one reason why I am hesitant to loan my vehicles to friends - with older vehicles that have old parts that could be ready to fail soon, one should be listening & watching for signs that's aren't normal and be ready to take action, i.e. pull over & shut down. Most people are not in the habit of watching the oil & temperature gauges & checking the dipstick every few days...and sometimes these cars make disturbing sounds (i.e. injector nailing) that are not of critical concern.

I find it disturbing that I've read so many stories on here lately of diesels that have been ruined due to sudden oil loss, vacuum pump, timing chain & turbo failure, and I think a few other scenarios. It would be nice if we all could all afford to replace all these parts to minimize the chance of catastrophic engine loss.
