Replacing headlamps

Replacing the bulbs in my 91 and I'm finding it a bit difficult. Can't seem to get the retaining ring to turn to lock the bulb in once I have the bulb properly placed. I changed one already and it was quite difficult to get the ring on. Any tricks to this?

Also, my passenger side headlight turns on when I have switch set to parking lights only. The driver side does come on once I turn switch all the way to the right. Not a major problem but I would like to fix it if I can.

Any ideas or a place to start trouble shooting would be appreciated.

[smart ass] Start by buying a set of ecode lights. You can then remove the DOT fixtures and deposit them in the trash where they belong [/smartass]

Its possible someone installed the locking ring wrong and forced it in place. I'd be worried it would fall apart as you try to remove it. But, if it does break the lamp will mostly stay in place in the fixture... the O ring will hold it.
