Oil overfill... what am I looking at

This is devastating and heart breaking and embarrassing, but I think I may have severely overfilled during an oil change tonight.

Did a hot oil change, let it drain for a couple of hours, replaced filter, fixed stripped filler cap bolt, after filling up, I took it off ramps, let it roll down the driveway and warm up for a few minutes, closed the garage, got back to the car, killed it checked the level, a little over but not by much, started to drive slowly and heard "pssst pssssst" and noticed the the oil pressure gauge had dropped from pegged to 1 in a blink. Look out the window and there's a giant oil puddle under the car, kill it right away.

How bad does this sound fellas? Cause it looks freaking terrible. If I had to guess, by the location of dripping oil and being an ignorant noob here, I'm guessing maybe the main seal blew.

I guess it's maybe more probable that the oil filter housing lid never sealed up and just blew out all that oil. FWIW, the trajectory (oil on the underside of hood, all over oil filter housing, back of valve cover, and in the direction of the air filter) and the sound supports this... maybe I'll investigate that further.

Any chance whatever happened didn't actually damage anything?

Was looking for new cars anyways but I not like this.

Sincerely pained,

~b

Not a big deal. Big o ring didn't seat right on the oil filter housing lid. Remove lid, reseat o-ring, add oil, drive to car wash and clean out engine bay.

A-ha! I took a closer look, the problem was 2 fold. We were both right. First off, my fix for that lid bolt didn't hold, and either compounding things or as a result of the lid not holding it in place, there's and inch of that big seal sticking out!!!

That's quite a relief. I might even be able to fix this before work. Thanks for the shove in the right direction!

Man, your imagination sure goes to the dark side fast.... before you can actually look at the evidence.... glad it worked out to be that... a very easy thing to have happen....
The main thing to look at now... is to be SURE those two orings on the bottom of that tube are good and new... and that the inside of the tube and the tiny hole at the top are clean... oil flows through that tube and hole...as small as they are...

You might want to give us a little more info about the Fix to the bolt.

The lid of the oil filter cannister is under full oil pressure of over sixty pounds perhaps and so the bolt needs to be sound to keep the oil pressure in.

If it had blown on the highway by the time you got the engine slowed down you might have run your bearings....an expensive proposition.

You're right leathermang, I've got the fear.

T, what I tried to do was bang the original stud down through the hole it stripped out, then threw a nut on the other side. This time I've got a grade 8 bolt coming up from the bottom with a lock washer. Held fine all day today, and I did quite a bit of running around. I know what you mean though, if this had to happen I'm glad it was like this. Also, there's a good chance that o-ring was out of place to begin with.

Oh, and I DID just replace those 2 little o-rings too. Now, my oil pressure reads low but the oil level reads fine. Thoughts?

I'm gonna get back to scrubbing the road in the rain. What a greasy horror show this has been.

Absolutely right. The internal pressure relief valve in the oil pump opens at 5 bar (about 70 psi). With cold oil the pressure is that high at idle and close to that above idle even with hot oil. O-rings should be checked often and replaced every year or two. Cheap insurance.

Describe low. It's easy to have dark thoughts about that change.

I just did the SAME thing the other night changing the oil on my w123.

I didn't get the gasket back on the oil filter cap and had a giant puddle of oil!

What a mess! lesson learned...

I have noticed the German filters "O" ring for the cap fits nice and snug. I have picked up a Wix a few times and notice the "O" ring is slightly larger and wants to slip off the cap. Just have to hold it in place until the lid is seated.

I usually change mine out at least every other oil change, just to make sure.

The first time I changed the oil in this car (in 1997), the o-rings had hardened. When I tried to remove, they disintegrated....

Had to get the o-rings before I could finish the change...

Low as in, lower than before the change, and lower than 1, sometimes dipping lower than I'm comfortable with at idle at stop lights and signs, and it's a heavier weight oil. But, that seems to have stopped after driving it for a day.

Odometer and trip meter stopped working this week too, 301627 I think. I got a lead on another 300sd, hopefully checking out Monday.
