If you take it back apart you need a new Receiver - dryer.....
actually ...if you know you have had a leak the system should be considered compromised and get a new R/D...

I remember that the A/C did have a leak at the front of the unit, although I was told it was very minor....

Think its a better choice just to replace the compressor and be done with it?

Current compressor is FourSeasons -- replaced somewhere between 1999-2003 (sticker still on there, although not filled in). How comparable are they are Nippodenso?

If you are going to have the system apart anyway...and can afford to replace that old a compressor I would sure do it... think about what time and cost ... perhaps a couple of years out... would possibly be saved... and the fact that these things seldom happen at ideal convenient times... like on a vacation trip far from home and your AC tools.... or your favorite trusted AC shop....
Those compressors WORK HARD....
