Overfueling 240D

Good morning all. First I would like to introduce my self. My name is Chuck, I live in Edgewood NM. I am a proud owner of an 83 W123 diesel. I made an.amazing find, bought the car, with an extra engine and transmission and new front seats and.rear bench for $500.00. Shows 134617 on the odometer. Reinstated the ip, got it running great, but it is.over fueling. Grey smoke with raw diesel smell at start up, that clears after a minute or two. On the highway it is fairly clean until I accelerate and he black grey smoke discourages tailgating. Other than that and trying to figure out the vacuum system the car is great. I am sorry if this was posted earlier, but in my searches I couldn't find anything. Perhaps my question was not acceptable to. Computer.

Thanks
Chuck Hudson

I'd explore the possibility of underairing as opposed to overfueling. Check the air filter.

I'd check the ADA system to make sure it is compensating for the altitude change. Make sure it's vented to atmosphere to begin with. After that I'm not sure how it works but with that change in altitude it could be the problem.

Ok. Stupid question, how do I adjust it? I am more familiar with the Standyne pumps on the 6.2 and he 6.9 ihi diesel. My Haynes book has nothing on it. Thanks again

Thanks for the point in right direction. I found a link to adjusting ADA.so.clockwise decreases fuel and ccw increases. Can't wait to try it when I get home. from work.
Chuck.

You might want to pull the injectors and test them. One or more may not be closing off.

Or loosen one injector line at a time if the engine will continue running in an attempt to spot a bad injector. The smoke should reduce if the bad injector is disabled.

You guys are chasing overfueling but he says the smoke is BLACK-grey under load. I have never seen black smoke out of a diesel MBz from overfueling, only grey or dark grey. Possibly two issues at play here?

I know this is hard to answer, Chuck, but how black is it, on the highway, black as a semi stack blows out when starting from a stop or mostly grey?

When you get the grey smoke after startup, do you mean that the exhaust is visible and smells... or is it making a grey cloud? How is the motor running during that warmup period, any shaking or loud tapping that goes away as it warms up?

PS Welcome to the board, Chuck.

Your altitude is not helping, at more then 6000ft a turbo would be nice. You said you reistalled the ip, Might want to double check the ip timing, may even want to go a just a little bit advanced. Check compression too. Maybe it needs an italian tune up.

Welcome to the forum Chuck !!
By now you have probably realized that we all try to be as helpful as we can.
Roy (whunter) is a fountain of knowledge & you are lucky he has provided you with a little light reading.
N/A MB diesels dont like altitude that much. Expect power reductions. I have driven MB diesels without turbos most of my life.
You need to have everything perfect to get a good result even at sea level.
In time it will be interesting to hear what fuel consumption you get. It will show if you are over fueling.
Once you have adjusted everything it will be great to hear how it runs up in the clouds.

As Layback alluded to, the issue may be poor combustion efficiency rather than excessive fueling. This can come from a variety of sources including worn out or otherwise defective injectors, incorrect injection timing, or paradoxically from poor fuel delivery to the injector pump. Besides injectors and timing, other things to check are the fuel filters (both of them), the lift pump (somewhat rare to see one fail but it happens), the valve adjustment, compression, and the strainer in the bottom of the fuel tank. Also, I see you have an '83, which would have EGR. Have you looked in your intake manifold lately? If it has half an inch of soot built up in it, that could be your problem.

Thanks all the advice. Compression is 330, 340, 340, 340. I am adjusting the valves this weekend. I did back down the Ada until well a1/4 turn at a time and drove it. I got it now so minimal.smoke at idle.and no black.unless I really tromp on it. This also lowered the engine temp. It was running at @100 degs on the freeway and now.it barely gets above 80. Thanks.again folks
