I know the FSM says not to use the 240 flywheel on the 5 cylinder but many people have done it.
The balance question... or matching the new flywheel to the old one is addressed in the 617 FSM... but it is hard to understand just when it applies to what....I think that the engine was balanced internally when coming from the factory.... but there is no way to redo that.. so the best you can get to is to match to the current flywheel...
Which, on cars this old, may not be the original or positioned as it came from the factory...
Basically it is a messy situation and I hope you can bring some light to the situation...
I've done four conversions and had the fw off my 84 280e euro. What I found is that all my diesel conversions were neutrally balanced but the 280 was not. The FSM says to balance the new fw with the old one but in my case we didn't know any better and did'nt do that (like Jim). My conclusion is that at the factory they use neutral balance except when they get a crank that will not balance out. Then they use the fw to make a total balanced assembly...hence the instruction to always match balance. The marks on the 280 were very very faint, almost like holograms on the crank end and the matiing surface of the fw. Easy to miss.

My advice is to mark your fw and crank when taking it all apart and then checking the fw from the engine for neutral balance. Then if putting on a new fw check it also and if both are neutral you are good. If one or the other is not neutral you must match the new fw with the one that came off the engine.

If not you will get your eyeteeth shaken loose.

Congratualations Jim! I wanna come down for a ride one of these days in your new buggy!

Yes Sir T W, you just come on down. Still have a few problems that I have to work out - signal lights don't work and fuel and temp guage inop, although the low fuel warning light does come on when the ignition is turned on. And I am having problems with the shifting. Might go to the stealer and see if they will order me the correct shift rods. But after being off the road I think since 98, this little old 240D/300 really likes to run. Also needs some new rubber in the front suspension. And the little car is so pretty! Man that body and interior is nice for 300,000 plus miles. You know that Nathan Carter whom I bought the car from has removed all his posts. I am surprised by that and can't see why he would do that, as I would have loved to go over is record of rebuilding this car. I would think the Forum Management would have a way to lock up "Posts" after 30 or 60 days so they couldn't be removed. What do you think about that?

TxBill did the same thing....
and Larry Bible unregistered to where you can not use his name for an advanced search..
Have no idea why anyone would want to be that childish...
In case some do not know... if a person has started a thead...and it gets removed ALL the rest of the information is gone also...
A real waste.
I can see that some people might want to remove what they had said in the OPEN FORUM... but not the rest of the forums...

Forcedinduction did that also. he did have some good info even if he was opinated and confortational about things. Craig just left a few weeks ago and deleated everything. I was following along with his new Adsitco engine install and was interested to see how it held up for him. he does put a bunch of miles on his 82 300D every year.

OD is the down fall of a lot of people. I stay out of it, never any good over there. It really adds nothing to the info of the forum. so when someone gets PO`d in OD or PO`d at a mod, they quit and deleate everything. That hurts everyone, especially if the were a great contributor with valuable info.

It is ok if they delete their personal info, don`t deleate the search function on their on line handle.
Yeah, it`s childish.

Just don`t get me PO`D, or I`ll take my toys and go home.

I was here for maybe three years before venturing into OD. I peruse there now every day but have the ability now to not get worked up about any of it. I certainly don't understand why the forum allows folks to roll up their stuff and pull out.

Ya gotta let it roll off your back like a little duck in the rain!

DD is my favorite place.

Larry had a lot to offer. I don't know what led him to venture into OD and go off like he did.

I wish him well.

Craig too.

Oh right,

I thought it might be something like that. In Maine I've seen the results of "people" (and I use the term loosely!) leaving funny squiggle tyre tracks on the hills by whacking stick transmissions in reverse...

...evidence of drink driving????? (Could be).

I will do that folks. Yes Siree, I will get it up there next week. I don't do much of that electronic stuff, but Danny wants to get a video of it done and we will post it right here. I don't know about the chirpping though, doesn't go along with my idea of car management.
