Smokes when shifting

I just purchased a 1985 300D. So far have only driven it back to my house, and I already really like the car. Before It warmed up it would belch blue smoke when shifting gears. It doesn't weem to do this when it warmed up. Where should I start looking? This is the frirst diesel (and Mercedes)I have owned, any help would be appreaciated.

I would replace the valve stem seals first... then see if you still have the problem... lots of instructions in the archives... parts are CHEAP... just tedious to do it... but combine with valve adjustment and save some repeat labor....

Sharing it is a lot more fun.... not much worse than being a one man shop...even if they are not helping per se... having someone to share the frustrations with is nice...

Any time you buy an old used car there's a lot of stuff at first, generally speaking. I call it "deferred maintenance." The stuff the previous owner put off because they knew the car wouldn't be theirs much longer.
