Testing Temperature Switch on Thermostat Housing?

1984 300td euro turbo

Some of you know that one of my thermostat bolts snapped off... Just got myself a new thermostat housing. It arrived with a thermostat and the temperature switch attached. How do I test the temperature switch to see if it's any good? What exactly does the temperature switch do?

Do you mean the actual thermostat ... the part that opens and closes to let more or less interaction between engine coolant and radiator ?
People may be confused by word switch... where is the switch of which you speak located ?

the thermostat is placed in a pan of water on the stove with a thermometer in it and the temp it opens at is noted...

Thermo switch is easy to test.

1) First check whether it is NO or NC ( normally open or close ). Measure the connector tip with casing with a ohmmeter. NO should be open, NC should be 0 ohm.

2) Dip it in hot water ( 100C ) to see whether it toggles.

3) Repeat a few times.

Lol It's quite good on a bed of brown rice.

So I can't get the darn thing to toggle. Maybe it's bad. It reads open. Stuck it in a pot of hot water, still reads open. Does it require power?

What is this thing for?

The pdf shows 100C and boiling water is also at 100C so it may or may not trigger. You may need to make sure the fluid you are using can reach 110C. Oil may do if you can measure the temp accurately.

You do not need power. It is only a piece of bi-metal inside which 'bends' at temperature and makes the contact. It is mostly used for turning on the Aux fan, turn off A/C etc, thru a relay, when the engine coolant temp is high.

BTW. Adding in some sauce, spices, rice, salt may increase the temp . Salt probably would do.

Got it to toggle! The temperature switch actually says 95C/100C. Just used plain water. I was trying to dip in water then taking it out and measuring. That wasn't working. I had to measure it while the tip was in the water. Had to improvise! Thank you!
