I bought some rubber stops (for the W123 chassis) a while back from the dealer and the quality wasn't there either... I'll try and remember to post some pictures. At least it wasn't suspension parts! May be compress ignite's nightmare is beginning? I hope not.

I just installed Lemfoerder ball joints on my 420 and they were made in Germany in April...and the boots are not rubber, more of a clear viton/synthetic material, felt high quality.

I know the stuff you mean - the ball joints as in the ones fitted to the axle housing at the LCA end do indeed have that type of synthetic translucent stuff. It is very different from the black rubber ones I mean. I've not named the thread very well have I? The problem I had was with the black rubber booted ball joints fitted to the tie rods.
