Visually is the only way I know of. Is your spare pump from a 722.1xx transmission? Did you get the old pump out?

My plan is to use a "spare" transmission which I have from an other car.

Unfortunately I don't have much information on the spare transmission.
The transmission fluid looks ok in the spare transmission.

There is a way to test the front pump - you measure the working pressure. There is apparently no way to adjust it. Unfortunately it is a test which is performed with the gearbox in place - however as you didn't get any fluid coming out of your cooler lines the chances are that it is dead.

So take it out like rs899 says and post some pictures of it.
