incompatible door checks
I talked my wife into dropping me off at the junkyard yesterday while she and the kids ran some errands. I had about an hour to work, so during that time I figured I would pull all the door checks off an '82 300SD, which I assumed would be compatible with my '83 240D. Not so. To my disappointment, I realized when I pulled one of my busted checks tonight, they are slightly different. You can see in the picture how the end tab on the 240D check is bent - which fits with the way the door metal is pressed on that model. I thought about trying to put one of the 300SD ones in the vice and bending, but I don't think that would go so well. Seems like there are several versions of these checks floating around out there. Maybe I'll have to buy some new aftermarkets; I was just hoping to snag some originals that still worked well.
If anyone is interested, I'll be posting them for sale in the parts section. I also grabbed two vacuum elements for the door locks. On the high note of the day, I also grabbed the wires I needed for the radio. The PO of my 240 had cut the wires to install a different head unit. He then pulled the other stereo and slid the original Becker back in for the sale. Unfortunately, the original wiring harness didn't get returned with the stereo. That's taken care of now. . . . let's jam!

Nice bit of information that - can you find any part numbers on them?
(I don't think they are printed on them but well - hey - you never know)

On the straps there are two sets of numbers. The first appears to be the manufacture date. All of the '82 300SD straps have "02 82" stamped on them (well, except for one that has "01 82") which must be the manufacture date in MM YY format. My '83 have "04 83" stamped on the strap. The second number is the length of the strap from the center of the furthest ball stop position to the center of the hole for the pin. The '82 300SD checks are stamped 100 mm. From what I can make out from my busted '83 240 check, the strap appears to be stamped 95 mm - which is the measurement I get on that dimension when I piece it back together (strap is busted in two). I'll pull one of the good door checks off my '83 tonight and get some pics to post.

I know others have posted the warning before, but keep these checks lubed up!!! The '82 300SD ones I pulled are nice and smooth, by comparison my busted 240 checks are dry. I think I am going to deconstruct one of these busted ones to see all the components and understand better the best way to keep them fresh and lubed.

I have straightened/bent ( cannot remember which way ) the door checks and they all fit. I believe they are all compatible as long as the mounting holes are in the right place.
However, you will be the final judge.

Army,They still list those old style on Fast Lane. Part# W0133-1617899 for the rear doors. chassis# 000000 to 258174 for the 80 240D and 000000 to 242529 for the 80 300D. list for $89.77.
I replace a broken old style to a new style on my 240D. some at PNP have no idea what they are. some think they are a hinge and others call it a striker. as I remember a striker is $2.50 and a hinge in $10. convince them it is a striker. Charlie
