Two piece lug bolts on a Mercedes
Anyone ever seen such an animal? The bolt shaft is tightened into the hub with an allen key, then the bolt head is screwed on after.
I have never seen anything like this, but evidently it was OEM on a set of european alloy wheels that came on the car from the factory. Can someone fill me in as to what the point of such a setup would be? I am thinking it might possibly be aesthetics, as the bolt heads are completely different in appearance than a standard Mercedes item (oval chrome heads).

My regular bolts have given me problems- broke a head off in the front rotor more than once on a car or two--again use some anti seize on any threads.

I know the MB wheels are hubcentric with the bolts just making sure the wheel sticks to the hub, but antisieze on them would be pretty risky..
btw Ive seen such two piece bolts in a very oldschool BMW 6 series (shark like thing). The rims were after market.

Why would making sure the threads dont become one with the rotor be risky? you think using antiseize will make them come loose by themselves?

In the climate here a small dab of anti-seize on lug bolts is a must. We have damp winters with liberal use of road salt, and hot, humid summers. Related yarn: The local Mercedes indy recently sent my bud a customer with a first-gen ML that hadn't had its wheels off in at least three years. They could not get the bolts out and wouldn't attempt to use the torch to heat up the bolts (chrome wheels) because, well, they're the Mercedes indy and they don't do dirty stuff like that.... Norm got the wheels off, but blackened two of them.

VW Golf experience led me to this, had 3 of the 4 lug bolts come loose on the highway, removed, cleaned them with some gas and put em back. Later on saw the repair manual and it told never to use antisieze on the threads or the collar. but I cannot put up any solid argument here, because I have driven my 95 124 with handtight lug bolts and they did not come loose.

Anti-seize
When I mentioned anti-seize, it was in the context of just putting a dab near the starter threads on each bolt. That won't cause a torqued lug bolt to loosen.
