Larry, I am sure a four would pull it just fine, but I have a low mileage 5 cyl not being used... I was just trying to be frugal or cheap (whichever).
You used the word fabricate . Do you mean after taking off the four adapter I would have to make an adapter plate for the five ?
You said "could bolt" , does that mean they were made to bolt up to one another ? Thanks, Greg

SilverfishK8,

All the 300D series were sold with standard transmissions. The standard transmission was an automatic transmission.

Yes, I thought transmissions had 5 speeds not 5 cylinders too. LOL.

Greg, a guy on this Forum has bolted a 4 speed transmission out of a 240D to a 617 motor in his 240D. His only problem was that he had to shorten the driveshaft. That shouldn't be a problem for you though.

The Transmission will bolt up to the 300D's engine, you just have to take everything from behind the engine and mount it (adapter plate, flywheel, etc).

IT CAN BE DONE.

leathermang,

I'm sorry I was not more clear about the adapter plate.

To put a 240D manual transmission on your five cylinder motor, you will need the adapter plate, flywheel, and, of course transmission and such, from a 240D. The adapter plate is removed from the 4 cyl. after removing the flywheel and must be bolted to the back of the 5 cylinder before installing the flywheel. This plate is different for various transmissions, not an adapter plate that you must fabricate. Make sure you get the adapter plate for the particular four speed that you find, they changed along about 1980, and I think there are only two different ones on the 123 cars.

Also, the crankshaft in the 300D is meant for an automatic and is not the same when it comes to installing a pilot bearing. For your purpose, I don't think this is a big deal because you will probably not be changing gears with the engine running. You can probably have something turned on a lathe to make provisions for a pilot bearing in the back of the 5 cyl. crankshaft.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out,

I wonder how many welder generators you could wear out before having to do anything to a 617 diesel in such an application. Be prepared for your welder buddies to ask you to build one for them.

What kind of generator and such are you going to use for this. I would love to have such a rig on my place. I've been fixing barbed wire fence longer than I can remember. I've thought for years that if I had a portable welder, I could over a period of years have pipe fence everywhere. I'm getting a late start though, I'm almost 53 years old.

Keep us informed on the project,

Larry,,, I just turned 53 on the 20th , so I don't think we are starting late,,,
I don't think a welder is much load... I think they like a diesel because they run so many hours and much of the time , percentage wise, they are at an idle.. where a diesel uses about 1/80 th what a gas engine uses for fuel.
I think that engine would have a better chance of being hit by a tornado than wearing out just powering a welder....
I have a welder that was integral with a two cylinder motor that threw a rod which I plan to put behind this engine... and it is so old I can't even find a name on it... but if you want a portable welder I will check with a guy down here that has several spares in his yard,,,, The fence work is what I wanted mine for mostly also..
