Consequences of turning crankshaft counterclockwise in valve adjustment?
I may have screwed up. Again! I didn't read the instructions carefully enough on a valve adjustment on my 81 300td and turned the crankshaft counterclockwise for all 10 valves. What are the repercussions of doing this? I'm a bit afraid to start it given some ominous warnings but no real specifics of why this is a bad idea.... quick help would be appreciated!
thanks! |

Lots of ominous warnings on here but no catastrophes that I know of. If I were you, I'd put a socket on the crankbolt and turn it a few revolutions in the right direction before starting it. Would be considerably easier to do with the glowplugs removed.

Yah I think IF it messes something up, it is the chain tensioner.... and that makes sense to roll it over a couple of full revolutions the right way with the G P s out to feel for anything wrong before you try starting it.

Turn the Engine in the correct direction of rotation a couple of times as previously stated. Except on the last rotation line up the Camshaft Gear Timing Marks with the one on the First Camshaft Bearing Tower and take a look at your Crankshaft Damper degree marks.
Depending on you Timing Chain Stretch and Gear wear it should be slightly after TDC (OT) a few degrees. Or simply report back and let the members see what you got.
