240d instant power!!

Just had to tell you guys about the Beautiful 82 240d i just bought.
I just got it last night and GOOD GOLLY it was a slow turd!!! Slower than a Key West scooter with a govener and a fat chic on it!! I took it on a drive to the gas station to fill it with fuel. While there checking the fluids i had a memory of when Pierre replaced the rubberized part of the throttle linkage on my 300d. While watching the linkage I asked my girl to press the gas. OH MY GOD!! with the gas to the floor the linkage only moved approx 1/4 of the way!!! I noticed there was a slotted adjustment and it was all the way to the low side. I loosened the 10mm bolt and slid it 80% of the slot the other direction and WOW!!! Massive speed and HUGE clouds of black smoke!!!(i like that part!) WOOHOO!! Well EEErrrrr I meant massive speed for a 29yr old 4cyl non-turbo German work of freaking art!!!! I can now run with the big dogs in the 45mph zone!! And I think i can take the fat chic on the scooter if on a long flat road with no head wind!! LMAO
Next on the list is the Vacuum leaks, and AC repair.

Question:
Where is a good place to buy little parts like the rubber air cleaner mounts, the bolt or assembly that holds the spare down in the trunk, and maybe some shifter bushings(seems sloppy)?

I'm amazed the PO drove it like this. I litterally had to floor it and wait for the momentum to build!!

Totally different than driving my TDI for mileage shifting at 2k and not going over 60mph. At least with the TDI i had the ability to speed up if a 18wheeler's grill is all i see in the mirror! With the 240d like it was, i would be a little scared to get out in rush hour traffic! As you can see in my picture, I've crash tested the w123 in the past and do feel safer in it than in the VW.

A lot of these cars get bad names for miss adjusted or broken throttle linkages, and vac leaks causing transmission shifting issues.

I've fixed several throttle linkage issues over there years. It's amazing what a quick adjustment can do sometimes. A well tuned 240D isn't as slow as some people think.

You are correct! And I am impressed with the dramatic difference such a small adjustment makes! I will joke about the 240d being slow, and it is by todays standards, BUT for such a heavy car the 240d moves gracefully down the road
I will be troubleshooting and repairing the vacuum issues next.

This is true.

A good valve adjustment, correct idle speed on the FI pump, correct throttle mlinkage, and you are ok.

I do notice the car runs better when it is at full operating temp, but that's true for about everything, right?

that's why I like mine so much.

How is the shifting itself? I'd make sure the bushings are all there and that the shifter arms on the transmission are bolted on.

Just rebuilt the shifter. WOW it shifts great! Before it was a sloppy mess and even had gaps between 1st & third where you'd mis-shift into nothing!(not a car for a newbe!) I guess I just got use to the sloppy feeling but now I'm a very happy camper!! I even shimmed up the bushings connecting to the shifting rods to eliminate the play there too.

Checking off the items on my "TO DO" list one by one. Motor mounts, Fuel return lines, & Vacuum leaks upcoming.....

One step at a time. It's nice when you tinker with something and the end result is a better machine. My 240 has come a long way from the $500 car I bought. Slowly but surely I've ticked off things that needed attention and the car has gotten quieter, faster, more efficient, and better looking.

hmmm this makes me think about adjusting my throttle linkage- one of my 240s is WAY zippier than the other (as in, one can actually merge on the freeway, the other i get out and push to get up to speed!)
where in the throttle linkage is the adjustment done? how do i know/test if i am getting full throttle with the pedal down?

You have someone press the pedal while looking to see if the throttle arm on the injection pump is being pushed to the stop on theinjection pump for the arm. It is not always just an adjustment either. Parts of the linkage support and system can wear and break with age and time.

I had the GF press the gas to the floor while i looked at the linkage move under the hood. I then determined that the linkage was only using aprox 1/3 of the max travel. on the linkage coming off the firewall to the motor, there was a slotted adjustment. I adjusted this 80% the other direction and Wa-La, MORE POWER!! In reality the power was always there, just not being used. In my case the 240d went from slow moving road hazard to respectable in town commuter.

Soon as i get my "Flux-Capacitor" working we'll be able to get Mom and Dad to the Fish Under The Sea Dance, and I'll be Back In Time!

Answer:
FASTLANE!!!!

for the bushings and mounts and pretty much any parts for your cars.

for the spare hold down, likely a parts car/ junkyard is the best choice.
we also have a parts wanted/for sale section of the forum
