no doubt. here are some more photos:

What is this dingus here that I've pointed to with the arrow? Should i put a golf tee in this?

here is the ominous oil cooler line wet spot. Gives me the creeps.

New combo switch is in! Three cheers for turn signals and wipers!

Anybody know what to do about the wee rips in this interior trim? can it be purchased? is it expensive?

First pic is of the cruise control actuator, no vacuum there.
Second looks like the oil cooler lines, make sure there isn't oil being slung on it.
Yea!
Consult an upholstery shop.

That appears to maybe be a jumper on the aux fan, disconnected from the wires that appear just below your thumb in the pic. Does the fan run all the time with the car on (if the fuse is good)?

Made some good progress this evening. Got the turn signals and wipers going, combination switch from gertie did the trick. also installed the hood pull. lubed all the door hinges and the throttle linkage with some fluid film. she's coming together. i think i will mess about with some of the vacuum junk and maybe get rid of some of it, per that diagram. thanks, toomany. valve timing and oil change are coming soon.
Before deleting, you may want to see what you've got and how it behaves in its factory(ish) configuration. I presume by your sig block you're familiar with cars more/less. The vacuum affects the tranny shifting. If you find the complete set of vacuum diagrams you can see the EGR routes vacuum based on temp. The system is one of "controlled leaks."

The car will run and shift fine if you remove some of the lines, but maybe not what you're used to or expecting. It's easier to modify from a known condition than to jump in and modify from what the PO did. Sort of like the wiring on the fan.

Hi yak,

(There is a rafting company up here called Hyak, funny)

The aux fan comes on when the AC is selected, but the Ac doesn't work, it just blows hot air. I'll cross that bridge in a while, mayeb not till next spring, when hopefully there will be more money, and when the AC might start to be nice again. it's just starting to cool down now outside, so i'm ok with hot air for now.

I don't think i'll do anything to the car that i can't reverse if necessary, but i would be interested in "de-1985-izing the car" if i can. I'm even thinking about swapping in a non-arv turbo from my wagon. i opened the arv up and it looks like a pain to block it off. more than just a simple plate would be necessary, i think.

With the additional kluge, the jumper may be "advanced jumpering" by tapping the aux fan off the pressure switch. That switch can see +12v when you turn on the A/C, but if the pressure is low, it won't pass the signal on to the compressor. So that combo may match your current observations.

You may want to double check that for the winter since the defrost setting would normally trigger the compressor (and select the proper flaps) but the aux fan would normally get triggered by the R/D temp. If it's jumpered to be R/D temp independent, in the winter when you want more heat, you could be running the aux fan to dissipate heat instead - and adding an extra load on the battery.

All part of the puzzle left from the PO.

RUST! knew it was too good to be true...

Found some rust finally!
Under the battery tray, the tray itself, and around the passenger side hood hinge well. both hood hinge wells were chocker-block full of grey leaf-gunk. surprise surprise! cleaned it all out with compressed air, sanded it a bit, painted it with rust paint (for now), cleaned out behind the quarter panels and the weird plastic cover business, armour-alled the plastic thing's gasket. kind of suspected the tray would be bad. all in, it's not too bad. while i was at it, i removed the front license plate mount and painted it too, because it had some surface rust.

changed the oil on monday and replaced the spin on fuel filter. the old diesel in the filter was GREEN. I think there's something in the tank, some THING in the tank. I'm gonna to drop it on the weekend and clean it out. betcha the tank strainer is all bunged up with guck. might account for the sluggish (more than my old wagon) response off the line. tonight i hope to change diff oil, sikaflex up my manky cv boots, and maybe do the tranny fluid and filter if i have gumption. wish me luck.

update for yak - i just plugged off the three components and all the lines recommended in that diagram from toomany MBZ. we'll see how it goes.

still havent got to the cv boots, but they're not torn through quite yet so i think i have some time.

pulled the fuel tank though and cleaned it out, the strainer was a solid mass of black goop, cleaned it off with some brake-kleen (amazing!), cleaned out the sender, and replaced all my fuel hoses (except the cigar hose) with new viton hoses.

next weekend's projects include the diff fluid, cv boots, and making a hood pad before i bugger up the paint on my hood. thanks for tuning in.

Lubricate the hood hinge swivel points. When they seize otherwise they rip metal out. Miserable type little repair after. The very back hinge pins are hard to reach but should be lubricated. Repair one of these and you will religiously lubricate from that point onward.

Have you test-driven it with every upgrade? Will help to tell you what's actually improving the ride.
