head gasket,torque values

i have a 95 e300d with a sheared glow plug on #6 which may require head removal for repair. my questions are, can the head gasket be reused with proper cleaning and use of a copper spray sealer, and what are the torque specs and tightening sequence for the head bolts on this 606. thanks

no

I don't remember the number off the top of my head but you torque it to an actual torque setting first and then two 90 degree turns.

No, the head gasket can NEVER be re-used..

Cylinder head torque.
This is a five stage procedure.

Stage #1. Torque to 15 NM = 11.06342 lb ft.

Stage #2. Torque to 35 NM = 25.81464 lb ft.

Stage #3. Torque 90° of rotation.

Stage #4. STOP, do not touch the bolts for ten minutes, mandatory settling time..

Stage #5. Torque 90° of rotation.

And be prepared not only for a good work out, but also feeling that you are going to break the bolts half in two.

Even after numerous MB diesel head installations, I still always feel like the bolts are going to snap on the second angle rotation.

i'm making a tool that will allow me to remove the prechamber and replace it with a sealed dummy one that i machined. i think the glow plug is backed off enough so that the prechamber can be removed. the dummy one has a fitting at the top that will allow me to attach my pop tester to and then i'll fill it with gear oil?then hopefully i'll be able to pump the gp out.

I do not think that will work... .although, I congratulate your ingenuity. Very clever.

The gp interferes with the PC until it is mostly removed from bore. If you can get the gp out far enough to pull the pc... there shouldn't be anything stopping you from going all the way.

Have you ever tried removing a prechamber?

no, i haven't. i ordered a retainer socket,then since i don't think there is room
for a slide hammer i made a puller that sorta looks like a gear puller. it is supported by the shoulders of the head and is tall enough to clear the cams. i machined a 22mm bolt that screws into the prechamber. this bolt has a 3/8 hole offset drilled[compensates for the pc being at a angle] which then is attached to a 1" fine thread allthread rod. a 1" nut is then tightened hopefullly pulling the pc out. the way you ask that question makes me nervous.

I don't mean to discourage you, but the idea of a pop tester pressurizing the combustion chamber does not seem likely. The volume you pump each time will quickly leak out past the piston, the rings and the valves.

Also, some quick math says that you wont get much more than 100 pounds of force even if you reach 2200psi. Can't you reach that amount manually from the outside?

In my experience, standard all thread rod is too soft to be able to pull a pre chamber. It's a really tough go even with the expen$ive, hardened commercially available tools.

I admire your ingenuity and I hope it works. Be prepared for a challenge and keep us posted.

Good luck,
Larry

with the prechamber being sealed at the bottom(those 8 holes plugged) the piston wont see any pressure or fluid, therefore the glow plug will see a force of 375 lbs with a 3000 psi input pressure from the bottle jack.
(bottle jacks can produce pressures up 10,000) hopefully this is enough to push it out. also the slickem from the oil should help. i'm not forsure this is gonna work, i don't even know yet if the glow plug is out far enough to allow the prechamber to slide by.best i can tell only about 1/2" of the glow plug is in the pc and i have moved the the gp out that far. hopefully the tool for removing the retainer ring will be here tomorrow and i'll be able to try this out. i don't want to take that head off!

thanks, hunt

Very nice. Thank you for clearing that up.

I would love to see it work.

Where is the GP broken? Are the threads seized in the head?

thanks, hunt

The cylinder head bolt tightening sequence diagram in post #3 is missing a cylinder.
