Question Is there a list of differential gear ratios and corresponding speedometer, Euro 300TD

I have been saving this question; hope the right folk see it!

Does anyone have a list of differential gear ratios and the corresponding speedometer part numbers?????

I have an inaccurate speedo in my euro 300TD and want to hunt for the correct speedo, according to the diff number.

Thanks for any help!

I will try to up-date with my gear ratio tomorrow.

the simple thing to do is crawl under your car and find out what the ratio is of the diff.
since it's a manual non turbo, it's likely a 3.69 which would be the same as every 240D out there... best to find out for sure though, as your speedo could be correct for the car and the diff may have been changed.

I would like to know as well for my 87 TD

I a looking for a speedo for mine & it seems that it might be easier to find something locally from some sort of 300e or other 124 body. Bear in mind that mine is in Kms so not so easy to find in the US. Cheers Dan

MA29964

I am guessing this is a sure sign it is a true Euro late import?
The DMV and insurance both had a field day with this short number

I will get the diff's gear ratio tomorrow;
been wondering about this as the speedo does not have a chrome capped center like the other dials??

It is a 1984 non-turbo 4spd manual.

Having had an '84 Euro 5-speed for 3 years, with VIN and speedometer issues, I'll share what I've learned.
All non-turbo W123 300Ds/TDs should have a 3.46 rear-end ratio. (3.69 is for a 240D)

MA29964 looks like a number assigned by some state DMV.
Like the US VIN, the Euro VIN on an '84 W123 should have 17 characters, but starting with WDB123, not the WDBA23 that typically begins the US VIN.

While the US VIN is located on the windsheild pillar and driver's door-jamb, the Euro VIN should be stamped into the firewall directly behind-above the engine, and also on an aluminum plate on the radiator support next to the hood-latch.

Both my '82 240Ds have bright aluminum dial-centers
but I believe by '84 the instrument dial-centers were changed to black. That's the color on my '84 Euro TD instrument cluster, the cluster illustrated in my original Euro owners's manual, and the cluster I scavenged from a Euro 84 non-turbo 300D at the Virginia Beach Pick-N-Pull a couple years ago.

My '84 Euro TD currently has a 100+ mph speedometer that reads too high in both the soeed and odometer.
I suspect someone 'federalised' my wagon with a replacement calibrated for a US turbo TD with a 3.07 rear, which would explain the high readings.

The speedometer I got from the Euro 300D at the Pick-N-Pull is calibrated to 140+ mph, which I might find a bit suspect, except that the markings are identical to the speedometer markings illustrated in my Euro owner's manual.

There is the number 123 542 05 57 on the bottom of the speedometer dial from that Pick-N-Pull Euro 300D.
On the back, it has a sticker that reads
12V GR 123 04
k=1360 99/4/34

Note - I haven't yet installed this speedometer, so I don't know if it will actually cure my speedometer-error. But I hope some of this info can help.

Happy Motoring, Mark

cool mark that's great info.
I was under the impression that ALL manual transmission cars had 3.69. my 84300D 4 speed is getting a bit of work done to it, so I will take a peek at the diff and confirm your info!
I knew the auto N/A 300's had the 3.46
and all but the 85 turbo 300's had the 3.07 (85 has the 2.88)

the 87 TD should have a 2.65 gear rear! I don't know what others have it, but the 2.5 turbo equipped cars do. (i've got a cluster for sale from a 93 if you need it!)

Try the speedo from a 93 300E/CE/TE or 94-95 E320 not 4Matic. The mph speedos for gassers go to 160 while for Diesels they go to 140. Doesn't affect accuracy.

When I was speedo shopping, I hoped to find one with an ASR warning light to hook up to the 105/127*C switch as a temperature warning. I found a non-ASR speedo for cheap.

My 5 speed, 85 Euro TD has a 3.46. I was thinking of swapping in the taller 85 US spic rear end but after a year of driving the TD I think I'll leave it alone, I'm more than happy with the performance.

My 1995 edition of MERCEDES-BENZ Production Models lists only the 3.46 for the non-turbo W123 300D/TD- manual or automatic. Confirmed by my just-completed inspection of my '84 5-speed TD and it has 3.46 stamped on the diff-case.

That is a big ditto amigos:
this 4 speed manual 300TD is stamped 3.46

now the incorrect speedo has a faceplate part# 123 542 59 01
it runs up to 115mph and is low about 5mph off from anyone pacing me

Would others with a euro 3.46 weigh in on speedo numbers?

Any idea how to figure out the correct matching speedo???
I just pulled a rebuilt one off a 1982 300D euro non-turbo auto, will it work?

A master list of these speedo part number to math diff gear ratios is waht we all need.....

Not so sure how helpful the dial part numbers are as VDO may have made several different dials, even for cars having the same rear end ratio (Autobox vs Stick, 4-speed vs 5-speed, 80 mph vs 85, black center buttons vs bright aluminum)
If it hasn't worn of fallen off, there is what appears to be a calibration number on the rear paper stickers of these speedometers.
My P-N-P Euro non-turbo 300D speedometer sticker is marked k=1360, while my spare 240D speedometer is marked k=1320, and another spare I have (origin unknown but MIGHT be from a turbo-diesel) is stickered k=1425.
