Got a warning for loud exhaust

I got a warning for noise in the exhaust, somehow my car is able to resonate its exhaust at 2000-2500 rpm. It creates a droning rattle. Ive took off the particulate filter it had in it and replaced it with a Y pipe because it had plugged itself up completely to the point of engine not being able to start.

I went to midas who checked the exhaust with a hammer and said that everything is OK and I need the DPF to quiet down the drone, the guy said that the exhaust mufflers were designed keeping it in mind.

Am I being pulled around or is it fact that removing the particulate filter in an NA diesel will cause a resonance in the exhaust, because the turbodiesel exhaust is more aligned (no pulses like the NA). If I have to bite the bullet how much wallet damage is it?

What kind of car is it?

particulate filter
Is this the same as the catalytic converter?

its a 1995 E300D as my signature says - uses the OM606.910 engine which has a particulate filter joining the 2 exhaust header pipes.

Droning rattle to me sounds more like the exhaust system is making contact with metal somewhere it shouldn't. I'd check it over carefully for that.

Me and the exhaust shop guy were under the car shaking the entire thing by hand, hammers etc. Its not making any contact externally. The exhaust droning starts at 2000 rpm and increases in volume if I floor the accelerator pedal, once past 2500 rpm - its gone.

Im looking at DPF prices - $1500 yikes.. - I think I need to add some resonator to kill this noise.

Many single turbo Diesel's drone without a resonator. Do you have one on your car? If not I'd recommend that you put one on.

I removed the convertor because it had plugged to the point of completely blocking exhaust flow.

The original exhaust is setup as

2 separate exhaust manifolds for pairs of 3 cylinders each
2 collector pipes from one manifold each to the oxidation thing (convertor)
single pipe to resonator behind the transmission under the driveshaft bearing
single pipe to the giant and heavy eberspacher muffler at the back.

The part in bold has been removed and replaced with a Y pipe.

Im pondering over getting a generic diesel cat installed where it was, the only modification needed would be that the Y pipe would be cut and welded to the front of the convertor, rather than trying to find the 2 inlet mercedes item.

I was also told by this same exhaust shop that removing the oxidation catalyst/convertor/DPF reduces low end torque output. This same person told me that I couldve torched the original one clean (meaning burn the soot off) Help me out here guys, Im kind of lost.

It has been my experience that whenever the cat is gutted on one of these (I have two) you are going to get the droning noise like you currently hear. Economical way to resolve it would be to try to find a good, used one to install.

hmm - so I believe I should start looking for a new generic replacement, it should cut down the drone.

I've gotten a warning too. Problem is there's no ordinance here for it. I let them know that and showed them their own city citations list. Me: 1 Cop: 0

Zulfiqar,

My converter thing has also been replaced - when I bought my car it had a small "glass-pack" type resonator on each individual pipe after the down pipes transitioned to horizontal, and they finally got rusted and needed replacement.

I replaced the two individual with a single large resonator, again like a "glass pack" type muffler. So we put in a Y pipe before the single larger resonator and single pipe all the way to the main muffler. It is louder than stock, but it does not really resonate at a particular rev level.

Here is what a run up to about 4000 rpm sounds like.

The exhaust job was only about $200 or so.

Just put a single cat behind your y pipe.
