Motor Mount Replacement

OK sports fans . . . I have done very little under the hood of my '83 300D and find myself having to replace the drivers' side motor mount. Exactly what tools (size) will be needed for the job, and can someone give me complete directions to do in my driveway?

I am pretty sure there are really good threads in the archives with all that information ..

AND I would suggest really thinking about not just replacing ONE...

Yep, I know . . . If I gotta jack it up to replace the one, I should replace the second one while I'm there . . . or I'll be doing the same job all over again withint a short amount of time.

I did see where one poster gave step-by-step instructions, but I haven't found the thread on the DIY stuff, yet. Lots about the suspension, but nothing specifically covering the motor mounts.

I have to dig up my tools, and it would be nice to know what size mm socket or wrench I'll need to use before I even jack it up. That's all.

If I knew off hand I would tell you... but I don't....
It is like with suspension stuff.... once you renew one... those almost as old or already ' going south' wear out faster because less of the movement is shared between them...

Gee, nobody knows? I can narrow it down a little. The allen wrench going up through the bottom is an 8 or 10, and the mount is held down by a 6mm. Finding a 6 that fits in that space can be a pain...

a few things are left out of the article...
namely, YOU MUST REMOVE THE ACCELERATOR shaft from the linkage to the firewall BEFORE you jack up the motor!!!!!
or you'll be replacing the pivot mount... not fun...
I think the center bolt is 10mm allen LONG reach bit
the two outers are 8mm I think. the nut on the shock is 10mm I think.

I think I have read that it is important to shoot some cleaner into that area first....and use a high quality Allen on it... do not want to round out something in that hard a place to deal with...

Wear safety glasses! I'd also use a dental pick to clean the allen cap bolt, as well as tap the allen socket into place so its seated firmly.

I remember doing the engine mounts on my 300D, walk in the park. I also replaced the engine shocks at the same time.

The sizes sound correct. I know the Engine shock bolts ar 10mm for sure. You'll als need a 6 MM wrench to hold the shock shaft while reoving the bottom bolt IRRC.

I used a 3/8 impact wrench to get ine out. Made it easy work.

Again, easy job. Took about 30 minutes the first set I did. Ditto on using GOOD allen tools. The cheap ones just do not fit good enough and will strip out the heads. I used a 4 foot extension on a 1/2 socked with a swivel head to break the main bolt free. worked like a charm.

Make sure you put wood between your jack and the engine... you don't want to dent up that pan.

I found that getting the front of the car up on ramps, then using my floor jack gave me more than enough room to get under the car and work. Also, having a small vise grip, to hold the engine shock shaft while removing the mounting nut helps a lot.
