Yes there is. I don't know the p/n. Do not gut it unless you want the car to sound like a "ricer" between 2000 and 2500 rpm.

pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by sounding like a "ricer". we are putting a 99 tc 606 in the war department's 95 300d and was planning on gutting the converter that is in it. will she notice the sound difference? i would hate for her to be embarrassed driving to walmart.
thanks, hunt thanks |

IMHO if you still have a muffler it won't be bad. Moreso if that 99 still has its turbo (IE spinny muffler

I am not gutting it. I bought one off eBay and it does sound obnoxious. The muffler shop showed me the hack job that was done to it. The exhaust system was replaced with a straight pipe that was welded BADLY and it even hangs low making the car bottom out a lot. Any idea how much it would cost to retrofit it with original parts? Are used parts OK (especially the converter)? Is there an aftermarket converter? Assuming that it is not illegal, is there a silencer that would quite it down as much as a converter? Thank you. P.S Someone on another forum told me there is no catalytic converter on these cars! Any comments? |

Is there someone who sells such a product?
Will it keep the noise level down to the same level of a car with a converter? Or are you talking about having a muffler shop fabricate a straight pipe? |

In all likelyhood it won't be as bad with a turbo.

the NAOM606 has a tuned exhaust from the factory, that combined with the inlet flaps is what causes torque in this engine as it is built like a free revving honda engine (oversquare bottom end with multivalve head) - except this engine uses diesel fuel to propel.
If you remove that single stage convertor you car will sound like a honda rice serving. The last muffler starts to rattle and then drone too. (heard between 2000-2500 rpm). I first gutted mine - the cat shell then rattled too, so it sounded like beatup crap going down the road, I then had a shop make a Y pipe and kick out the kitty's skin - rattle quieted down but still had muffler rattle, I then dished out USD 150 for a magnaflow diesel cat. 2.25 inch pipes and 16 inches long in total, the exhaust guy put the Y pipe infront of the cat and welded it neatly and the (whipped cream smooth) sound of the OM606 returned. The turbo engines will never emit the rice can sound as the turbo changes the exhaust into a long stream rather than the pulses of an NA engine and specially a car that has tuned headers like the E300D. If its partially blocked - you can try cleaning it with some acidic solution (citric acid I think) install back and drive it like a stolen italian car - rev the bananas out of it to generate some serious heat in the exhaust to burn out the soot - dont worry about engine speed, this engine loves to rev to 5500 rpm and pulls hardest between 3500 and 5200 rpm.

I'm sure a better-sized resonator would help and be cheaper.

Do you have a P/N for the magnaflow converter? I went to their site but there was none to be found. Thanks. |
