I just installed a Curt receiver hitch from JCW on my 84 TD. cost about $195, shipped. the unit for sedans is way less, like $140.
install was pretty straight forward, drop the bumper, mount hitch using some of the bumper mount pionts, hang bumper.

I had the bumper mount style hitch- worked great until I got rearended- then I didnt trust it any more, I had to reinforce the bumper mounts while I had it off- the bodyshop wouldn't touch it.

I have towed well over 1000lbs with no issues.

I've got a factory hitch or the CD, like a few have mentioned, bolts to bumper and trunk, holes pre-drilled.
pawoSD, that looks pretty good.

do a search....I posted a ton of pics of my home made frame mounted hitch for my old 123 wagon. It was solid, Class III type construction, it will pull a tree stump outta the ground.

Oops, I just did a search, not many detailed pics of my old hitch, but I didn't search the archives too extensively.

1980 300SD Hitch

Photo of the hitch on my 300SD. Attached at the bumper and at the spare tire well.

I've never used it in the 6 years I've owned the car but the PO pulled a small pop up camper.
