OM617 shakes after overhaull
hi guys
as stated in my signature, I have 500sec which has been adopted to 84 300sd turbo engine,as the engine itself had loads of blow by I have had it to overhaul completely, during the overhaul engine mounts are changed also.. the tranny one is good... now, car has a power but shakes a lot at idle, I have ordered new rack dumper bolt as I have old one (silver) but some bosch guys told me that my elements are almost bad and shakes might come from IP itself... new fuel lines are also on the car and fuel filters .... anyone had similar thing with MW pump like this? *just to add,..before the overhaul the shakes were lot easier.... thanks edit< by the way does anyone knows what is this location part itself....position 2 red arrow has been burned..?

RD bolt first and foremost. Then troubleshoot from there.

What is entailed in "complete overhaul"? Did you check or replace the injectors, was compression checked, were the valves set, or was the IP timing changed? How's the idle RPM? Should be 650-700PRM.

the part pointed to by the red arrows is the monovalve. it controls the amount of heat for the cabin in your car.

x2 on the sophistication of the overhaul... how much did it cost?
what's the compression on EVERY cylinder now that it's been done? were the valves ground/Replaced? new liners? new pistons? new rings? new bearings? turbo? obviously, the IP was not replaced, but were the injectors popped and balanced? Timing Chain? rails? Oil pump and chain?

as I have been told, pistons remained old ones, new sleeves are put in,new rings, new valves (both),new bearings, new water pump, chain was ok, oil/chain and that crazy plastic pin was ok... injectors are tested and all pop at 122/125 bar, turbo has not been touched as it has no play and work fine... all parts are from Germany (Goetze and some Mahle...) mechanic also say that he has adjusted valves to 15/35 even if I told him that it should be 10/35 by the book... he said that valves so close are prone to stick...? also he said that he made some 15 degree chain settings...that part I did not understand..... (was he referring to IP timing or chain ....beats me...) car does not have blow by now and exhaust smoke is ok (sometimes partially bluish...just on seconds thou...) yeap...sounds like......trouble trouble coupe ... )

unfortunately rpm gauge does not work so he adjusted it by the his very own "third eye" ... when you spoke of IP timing I assume it is IP MW pump related.... if so...no he did not touched it....

ok, so new liners, and rings, but old pistons... nothing done to the head but changed the valves... hmmm usually, the valves are ground 3 angles, and the head is also... and the guides are replaced or knurled, also new valve seals installed... on the head.
your blue smoke on startup makes me think you have bad guides, and seals... loose on the intake is not a huge deal, but 50% loose sounds like too much to me, and 35 is correct... 15 would be correct if he did it warm, but then 35 should be 45 I think... you might want to get a firm explanation of what was done to the head. motor was running poorly, and the chain was kept, and the IP was not even adjusted? wow. I'd like to know the method the tech used to prove the chain was not needing replacement. some techs just grab the links on the cam and FEEL for stretch... this is useless on a tensioned chain...

well,... the forum has went wrong now
as I have been informed the head has been hydro-tested, honed and new cylinder sleeves are plunged in .... basically he adjusted chain as he adjust all other 617 non turbo engines... is this ok or he goes wrong with this one...? well I have to admit, even if I have read all IP timing threads, english is not my native and I might misunderstood a "thing or two..." edit: guides and seals are also new ...

Average general mechanic in europe should be more familiar with this engine than his american equivelant. The poster and car are in europe I believe.
Did the mechanic remove and install the engine? Or just do a mechanical rebuild and you installed it. If you just installed it have the guy have a listen to it now that it is running. |

nope,... I did nothing mechanic took engine out, rebuild it and put it back ...
I will visit bosch center in hour or so and will see what those guys have to say about this issue... I have notice this morning that on cold car does not shakes so much,..maybe just a "diesel shake",..but on warm it gets lots worst ...

well,...it seems that my mechanic is not a average one )
bosch guy took some spectrometer device and after measure they stated that injection timing is sooooo wrong. as I understand them for my engine om617.950 it MUST be 24 dg btdc, and my mechanic has fixed it on 15 dg atdc .... now, what do you guys reccomennd, should I press my mechanic to take off pump and regulate chain to 24 (or 22 so it can be manually adjusted later in bosch service) help,..I need my "lighting" back

Yes take it back to the mechanic and ask him to set it up properly. It isn't a big deal for a professional. Where are you in Europe? It is a big place you know...
