Outrageous insurance rates on 300D

So about a year ago I looked on different car insurance sites to get an idea of what it would cost a 16 year old to insure either of two cars: A 1984 Mercedes 300D or a 1991 Toyota MR2. So at the time I think Allstate gave me around $120 a month a piece and a 6 month premium of about $650. So a year later I guess I got an updated quote in the mail for what would be a 17 year old to insure these cars. The MR2 costs $94 a month and a 6 month premium of $563 but the 300D would cost $255 a month and a 6 month premium of $1533 . The MR2 is actually a more valuable and a much more rare a car than the 300D . Now if someone could make sense of that, go right ahead.

Probably the word "turbo" in relation to the 300d.

Insurance company databanks tend to spit out wanker numbers for anything with a turbo installed. Either that, or the company just had a claim for some maniac drunkard in a w123 who wiped out an entire school bus full of kids in a fiery explosion.

You would have to actually speak to a live human to sort it out. Or find a company whose backroom people have their brains in gear. I had a brief out of body encounter some years ago with a rookie agent over one of my SDs, on this very subject. Thankfully I deal with a small local company and she was able to actually call someone with a clue.

To suggest that a 17-year old would be less of a risk in an MR2, than in an old diesel Benz, is amusing.

Well the MR2 I put in there was the turbo version so that shouldn't be it. Anyway I am not planning to use All State as the insurance my parents have offers nice discounts for bundling insurance with the parents and their insurance is inexpensive anyway

Does the Toyota have air bags or other such safety features that the MB doesn't? This will influence the rate for sure.

All 5 cars with $300K liabilities only. Ourselves and young daughter driver and it comes to < $1000 per year with AAA. I thought cheap insurance is the beauty of old MBZ. It works out to be less than $200 per car per year. Am I doing something right?

I thought so too, ive got three cars insured, a VW, an MB, and a Chevy, newest one is 1989, and total is under 120 a month with USAA. Weird that it would ever be so expensive for an old diesel benz.

Location is also a big factor though, I once moved about 1/2 mile into a different neighborhood, and my insurance went up about 15 dollars a month because of the denser nature of the neighborhood with narrower smaller streets, higher chances of a fender bender or some such.

I believe both anti-lock brakes and airbags were options but most have them on the 91 model. My question is why did the rate double for the 300D while the MR2 dropped. As far as I know the MR2 can be a relatively safe car but it weighs less than 3000lbs so I would feel much safer in the 300D, and it rides lower than most cars.

I pay a little over 700 a year for my 300D. USAA is the best.

Yes, It's likely the lack of airbags and ABS.
I was with State Farm for years, until I switched to the antique plates and insurance. Those were the reasons given for the higher rates on my car vs. my wife's 2003.

Find an insurance agent with integrity and 15 years in the business. Unless the 300d is extremely nice, don't carry comprehensive. The quoted rates may not be "outrageous". They may be only expensive. Rates are a function of claims paid and unfortunately, many of our beloved young offspring drive like they left their brain at home.

Parents work hard to teach them and pray that they survive to old age.

I had the same thing with Farm Bureau(sp). Full coverage was about 3 times more for my 84 500SEL than it was for my 94 C1500 chevy truck. I ask my agent (family member) why the big difference. He explained that when the Mercedes was first sold, the insurance companies assigned a number to it. Same with the truck and that the number never changes. He said, think of it as a multiplier number. I mentioned that the truck was worth probably 4 times more than the MB and their losses would be higher if the truck was totaled than if the MB was totaled. He said he was sorry but that is the way it is. SO, i canceled the full coverage on both and kept only libility.
I have already saved enough money to replace both of them. Insurance is a scam.

"Full coverage" is a lot like a "full bucket." It sounds impressive, but you don't know if it's a little bucket or a big bucket.

I have liability only, but both of my cars TOGETHER are $290 for 6months with progressive. So roughly $600/year = $25 per car per month.
