Outrageous insurance rates on 300D

So about a year ago I looked on different car insurance sites to get an idea of what it would cost a 16 year old to insure either of two cars: A 1984 Mercedes 300D or a 1991 Toyota MR2. So at the time I think Allstate gave me around $120 a month a piece and a 6 month premium of about $650. So a year later I guess I got an updated quote in the mail for what would be a 17 year old to insure these cars. The MR2 costs $94 a month and a 6 month premium of $563 but the 300D would cost $255 a month and a 6 month premium of $1533 . The MR2 is actually a more valuable and a much more rare a car than the 300D . Now if someone could make sense of that, go right ahead.
