driveshaft for transmission swap

I'm in the process of putting a 240d manual transmission into a 300sd. The current challenge is with getting a correct length drive shaft from the transmission to the center bearings. Since the automatic housing longer the existing drive shaft is too short.
I can take it to the driveline shop and have it lengthen but wondering if there might be something in the salvage yard that would work. Does anyone know what make/model might have the correct length driveline?

If you can find the manual transmission type number (like 717.XXX) you might be able to work out whether it was ever fitted by the factory in a W126.

I've been collecting this sort of information here.

FSM + EPC data => Chassis / model / transmission / drive train information

I hope it helps.

It won't give you all of the information you need just yet as I don't have any of the prop shaft part numbers - but perhaps EPC can help you there.

If you do get the parts numbers for a particular chassis / engine / transmission type I'd like to hear from you!

Typically it has been assumed the automatic trans and the 4 speed are the same length on the W123. So like on my swap of the 617 into a 240D car, we just take four inches out of that short front section. The engine is 4" longer, the trans is backed up by 4" because of that additional length and we shorten the drive shaft by 4" and everything works out. Now you are using the original type engine and if the transmissions are the same length, then the front drive shaft "should" be the same. It is hard to measure the overall length of transmisions unless the are out and you can put them up against a wall. But I would think that your original front shaft would be right.

I'm pretty sure the manual trans is 2" shorter than the auto... the reason you have to shorten the 123 driveshaft is because the 240's engine is shorter, and you reuse the 240's driveshaft and it's too long for the 300 engine... the 300's driveshaft would be too short.

This thread will give you am idea the difference in the lengths of an auto and manual trans. this auto is out of an 79 300CD, but Iam sure the SD is about the same length.

240D 4-speed manual swap in 300CD

Not sure which 4-spd trans you are going to use, the all aluminium one like in the picture of the old iron box. may both be the same length.

Sirnik84 did a 4-spd swap in his 84 300SD reciently, maybe contact him for the dimentions on the DL.
