Ha ha. I do that all the time. I drove a 5-speed manual car for many many years, and when I'm in the 240D, I am always searching reflexively for 5th gear when I get to about 65 MPH.

It is funny.

Hmm, never... though I wish it had a 5th gear like my M3. And in my M3 I wish it had a 6th gear

Has anyone got experience of 7 speed automatics? Apparently they are really irritating as they can't decide which gear to stay in...
No 7 speed but my Altima has a CVT. That takes some getting used to.

My 83 300SD sounds like it is ready to blow when I hit 62 real MPH. I was driving at 65-70 but I found out using my GPS today that 80MPH is really 62 MPH. I used to cruise at 70 fake MPH thinking the engine is surely spinning fast enough for this to be correct. Gee, people are in a hurry today. Why aren't I home yet, wow, this is a longer ride than I thought. I assume someone installed a gasser cluster in my car. The registration says about 250K while the odometer says 122K and it doesn't even work.

I definitely own a hoopty. I can buy new parts for the prices PNP charges. They will count every single bolt, screw or attached part of whatever you pull. You want a PS pump and few little odds and ends? $180, please! Yeah, their excuse is they need to get 10x what they pay for the car you pull from.

The neighbour has an automated manual gear box on her car - terrible French thing - now that is just outright frustrating. Other neighbour, however, has a VW DSG - quite nice in my opinion.

Do you get a constant drone from the engine with a CVT gearbox? When Volvo first introduced a (DAF?) CVT gearbox in their little cars in the 1980s the engine always sounded like you were trying to kill it before the sodding car started to move. They were usually driven by retired people which also added to the "get the %^^&& out of the way of that idiot" effect with all that noise and no go!

The Nissan CVT is actually pretty good. No droning and 30 plus mpg so far since the engine isn't ever really spun up.

I sometimes go for 7th

On my bike. I did the same thing on my old bike.

I don't go for fifth on the 300D, since I've been driving that transmission for so long. Another gear would be nice.

I do have experience with 7 speed automatics, but only with the 4500 Allison in the MTVR. As far as automatics go, it's about as good as it gets. I'd still rather have a ten or 13 speed.

My CVT experience is limited to the Dodge Caliber rental I've maligned elsewhere on this forum. Short version: very much NOT impressed.
