monark nozzle pop test

Took my injectors with the Monark nozzles in to be pop tested.
The shop was unfamiliar with Monarks. The injectors made a cloud pattern.
is this normal for Monarks? According to the tech guy the injectors are supposed to chatter
and make a swirl pattern. The guy was nice and let me watch all the tests.

He cleaned up one of the Monark injectors and retested it. It then squirted instead of making
a cloud and he said the injector was toast. If you shim an injector does that cure the squirting?
These nozzles are about three years old.

Trying to learn about these critters,
Jeff

Squirting Injector is not good.
However, you do need Spring Tension on the Pintel for it to spray correctly.

The Monark Nozzles did produce less of a stream than the Bosch Nozzles I tested but the Bosch Nozzles were used worn out ones so I cannot use them to compare.

It is hard to say what is going on without being there.
The reason for saying that is that a lot depends on how you manipulate the handle on the Nozzle/Pop Tester.
If you take a long fast stroke on the Tester Handle the Nozzle may not seem to spray right. The Plunger on a Factory Made Nozzle Tester is maybe has 2.5 times a larger diameter and a longer stroke compared to the Plunger in the Elements on your Fuel Injection Pump. This means you can move a lot more Fuel through the Injector with a stroke of the Nozzle tester.
When you manipulate the handle you kind of want to gestimate the amount of Fuel that would actually go through the Nozzle. Meaning a long stroke is way too much.
Short strokes that create a spurt of Fuel are more useful.

Anoter problem is that C Sean Watts put a note in mine sayint that the presertive Oil needs to be washed out of them before assembling them.

When this is done you cannot mix up the Pintel/Needles and insert them into a different Nozzle Body as they are mateded to a specific Nozzle.

Not on Monarks but I have also seen cases where there were little particles of Metal inside of the Nozzle; so that means they need to be cleaned out, blown out with filtered Air and dipped in Diesel Fuel before assembling them.

I have rebuilt and tested 25 Injectors with Monark Nozzles. Out of that I had one bad spray pattern. The rest were excellent.
All of the Nozzles even the one with the bad spray pattern chattered.

Maybe there is a local Member who has a Pop Tester homemade of otherwise that can recheck them for you.

Interesting.

Tomorrow Ill be replacing my injector nozzles with new Monark ones.
Anxious to see what difference it will make.
My 603 has the original Bosch...
Should be fun.
Cheers

monark test on youtube

Mercedes Diesel Fuel Injector Spray Pattern Test by Kent Bergsma - YouTube

Found this video for Monarks.
Doesn't seem to chatter like the ones I saw today.
The place I went to did the pop tests for free.
I gave him some money anyway since he spent some time with me.
Diamond Diesel in Sacramento.

You would not expect to have chatter during the spray pattern test.
The chatter test requires that the pump be actuated much more slowly as compared with the spray pattern test.

I see. So those are two different tests.
I keep toying with the idea of building a pop tester of my own.

So, can you adjust the spray pattern by shimming
or only the pop pressure?

Thanks,
Jeff

Just the pop pressure.
