The first thing i would check since both functions have quit would be the speedo cable if it has one.some MB cars have electronic speedo. if it has a cable you will have to pull the gauge panel to get to the cable, some folks get the panel out by taking the lower dash panel out (right in front of your knees) working their hand up behind the gauge panel and pushing it out from behind.Unscrew the speedo cable, you should be able to do it by hand then see if you can turn the small square inner cable,if you can the cable is broken and Peach Parts is your source for a new one.The install is pretty straightforward if you have a 10mm socket and ujoint and extension to disconnect the lower end of the cable at the transmission. If its electronic i cant offer any suggestions. Don

Does not have a cable. On my 95 S350 it worked off a signal from the rear wheel sensor(s). When R&R my ABS computer (thinking it was the cruise control unit) I bent a pin, ABS light lit, fault code was rear wheel sensor failure. After 20 miles the speedometer stopped. Cleaning contacts and installing the ABS computer correctly fixed it.

Try cleaning the rear sensors and if that does not help then the ABS contacts Check for ABS codes. Maybe there is a wiring problem from the rear of the car. Consider pulling the cluster and cleanng connections. Remove left ac vent and push cluster out while using pulling tool.

There has been a new cluster for sale on craigslist PA for a while. It has also been offered on ebay.

Are the sensors synonymous with abs sensors say that are on a VW? If I remove the rear wheels will I have to take off the calipers to get to these sensors? I honestly don't want to spent $500 to replace a cluster. DO these sensors need to be cleaned or replaced. ANy chance you have any pictures . Thanks

I know nothing about VW repair after 1981 models. Calipers stay on. No pictures. Easy to do, no cost, may help.

Hi. I'm not sure how it relates to a 1994 S350. I can only speak (semi) intelligently about my 87 300sdl (W126). On the w126 the ABS sensors, front (on each wheel) and rear (one on the rear diff), are unrelated to the speedometer / odometer. There is a separate hall-effect "vehicle speed sensor" at the rear of the transmission whose output signal is used by several systems on the vehicle including the speedometer, cruise control and climate control system.

If the cruise still works, I would think you could probably rule out the sensor itself and should look towards possible connector issues - i.e., loose or intermittent electrical connectors, grounds, etc.

I misspoke when I said the speedometer did not work. It is only the Odometer that is not working. Does this make a difference in the diagnosis?

Since the odometer is analog and the old style that turn by little gears could it be the gears in the odometer have stripped and need to be replaced? If so could I salvage the odometer from a another mercedes and install in mine? Im not sure if just the odometer pops out or not.

I Guess it could be, but I have read on other forums that the portion of the speedometer / odometer chip (UAF2115) that drives the odometer stepper motor (that drives the little gears) is prone to failure but the rest of the chip can continue to work. I only know a little about the electronics of the speedo, and know nothing about the reliability / failure modes of the mechanical portion(s). Sorry.

Would you know or anyone else if this can be tested to see if the problem is electronic and no power is getting to the motor that drives the odometer gear or if it is just the gears that are stripped on the odometer?
