Front End Creak, 84 300sd

Hi all,

I recently developed a front end creak on the passenger's side of my 300sd. It happens noticeably when turning at low speeds, and when I hit a bump at low speeds. I can also make the noise if I press down on the car on that side when parked. I jacked it up and tried to shake the wheel to check the balljoints, and there was no real movement. What else could it be? Or can the balljoints make noise before they actually get loose?

Thanks

Inspect the lower ball joint boot, my CD had a similar issue, I replaced the lower ball joint, no more squeak.

Ball joints will squeak when they run out of lube. If left in that condition they will wear out. You can probably determine what is squeaking by driving up on ramps and having someone bounce the front end while you feel various parts. The squeaking part will vibrate, or you can use one of the cheap mechanics stethoscopes from Harbor Freight to pin point the problem part.

Could also be the Guide Rod Mount.

There is a Rod that runs from the Lower Control Arm to the body. this mount is attached to the body. the Guide Rod screws into this mount.

Thanks all. I know I have guide rod issues, as I get the clunk when I drive over bumps. I have the guide rod repair kit, but haven't done it yet. Can the balljoints be lubed without removal?
Thanks

Not really, they don`t have any zerks. (grease fittings)

I don`t know if they are still available, but I bought a needle with a zerk on one end to fit into a grease gun. I suppose you could poke it into the boot and give it a shot of grease.
