Would you be mad...

...if upon picking up your 1969 vehicle from the most reputable auto glass place in town, the technician says, "I lost a moulding clip, so I just reattached your chrome windshield moulding with a 1" sheet metal screw into the body..."?

Was unable to talk to the shop manager today, but tomorrow morning....

The thing that pisses me off the most is that they would never do this to a 57' Chevy or a 2000 Toyota. They were just like, "oh, it's a diesel who cares der dee der der..."

$370 for seals from MB dealership
$350 labor at pro auto-glass shop
And a 1" sheet metal screw drilled through a chrome trim piece into my car to replace a 38 cent moulding clip.

I'd make them pay every cent necessary to get it fixed right. Unbelievable.

Yikes

Oh, I'd be more than mad. At the very least, they should be buying you some new chrome molding to replace the one they put the screw through, And fix it correctly. Also any damage the screw made going in to sheetmetal, if any. Although I doubt I'd want them to touch my car again after their first attempt. Unreal that some mental midget would think "that is okay" to do to any car, let alone a classic M-B.

There are websites online, where you can rate businesses based on what kind of service you feel they exemplify. And you can see where other people have previously commented on. "Yelp" is the first one that comes to mind, although I know there are others. I would let the Auto glass business owner know that you would like your car repaired to your standards, after mentioning these consumer based websites.

BTW, that is where I looked to find an auto glass place for my own Benz, found a company with 100% perfect comments & went with them. They came to my house & did it. And I paid a lot less than 350 in labor. Just a suggestion.

... I do not think I would have left the shop without getting the OWNER there in person to put in writing that the car needs to have the hole properly repaired, and a new trim from Mercedes to replace the damaged part. also, I'd want the employee fired on the spot.

Unbelievable?

Hell not around here. Absolutely typical. "It's just an old car."

I would have gone ballistic on the spot, right in the face of the knuckle-dragging moron who thought it was a good idea. Did I say that loud enough?

Yeah, I feel a little embarrassed that I didn't go ballistic on the spot. I think I was in shock a little, I screwed up major by not confronting them on the spot. I'm still new to actually caring about stuff like that. Every other car I've had was a complete beater. Called the shop 5 mins after I left, manager had already left (I picked the car up at closing time...) Just sent an email to the owner, and I am going to call tomorrow.

@ Desert Panther

I actually chose these guys based off of their Yelp rating, nearly 5 stars. And I spoke extensively with the guy that gave me a quote during which he said they have worked on several vintage MB's.

I really really really hope they don't try to say some BS like "You took the car home, so we can't do anything now..."

If they try that, I might have some Judge Judy in my near future. It baffles the mind that someone would think that was acceptable.

P.S. I would post a picture, but I dropped my camera on the way out to take one, and now all my pictures come out looking pretty psychedelic. Not my day...

How is that possible? It's digital right? Probably still takes good pix... LCD is just messed up.

Royally pissed

And I'm a patient man.... But I would not leave until I got a manager.....or at least say something about it. I'd have them pay to have it fix the correct way or threaten them with legal action...and be willing to do it.

Let's see ..NEW CHROME STRIP.....but then they have to replace the rest of it to match.....repair the body. Paint the body....

Maybe get an estimate from the MB dealer and take it to them..

And don't forget --- a new clip!!!

I was confident I made the right decision to have an MB dealer replace the windshield in my '83- now I'm sure I did.

I would call the manager and discuss the infraction. I would end the conversation by asking for his boss' phone number and address. Then follow up with a letter to the manager. Paper can not be ignored like electronic communication and phone calls.
