Thumbs up Engine Shock Mounts

T.T.T. .

This is a great thread ! .

I had a delivery valve leak and it killed my left upper engine shock mount , now I have a cheaper way to go .

To update my prior 2012 & 2013 posts, since then I fixed another engine shock top mount by cutting out the old rubber and filling the annular gap w/ PL1 black polyurethane caulk (Home Depot for roof gutters).

I have used the same to fill engine/tranny mounts, as have many others on many cars (Google Images). However, if you fill your engine mounts, you will need a thick backer plate underneath otherwise the weight transferred to the thin factory sheet-metal below will crack it (see my post w/ photos, 2015?).

603 Engine Damper (shock) Mount – Repair Success

Thanks to Mr. Mach4’s shore hardness schooling….

Used 3M Window-Weld 08609 (shore hardness: A60) (<$30 @ AutoZone) to replace broken down original rubber in the engine shock mounts . Cleaned surfaces as in other threads. Let them cure for about five days. Complimented the fix with new engine shocks.

Now some 750 miles post fab, they are holding up well. No identifiable transmission of motor to body vibration. Holding the motor well i.e. motor presents as running smoother. Cleared the startup / shut down bump / shake, as well as smoothed motor / trans twisting at acceleration.

In combo with the 20,000 mile/aged Lemforder/Phoenix motor mounts, the old 603 is now pretty darn smooth.

Both of my engine shocks are busted, so are the shock mounts and motor mounts. Do I need to purchase two engine shock mount kits or just one?

I would make my own but I don't have any drills or fabrication skills at all.

You can do shock mounts without a drill or skill. Find something to fill the hole in the mount and coat it with stuff that urethane won't bond to.

I used a 5/8" deep well socket to hold open a space for the engine mount bolt. Just flip the mount upside down and set the socket in place. Make sure you clean the existing rubber and steel that you want the urethane to stick to.

If you know the name of the product you want the 2 below industrial supply compeitors would certaily have warehouses in any large City. You can look for your product on their websites.
However, if you shop around on eBay or Amazon for the same product and are willing to wait for it to arrive you could likely pay less for the stuff.

The strain from the new shocks actually doing there job unlike the old worn ones caused my engine shock mount rubber that was dry rotted to pull out and seperate completely from the mount. Was stunned by the 275 dollar per mount price tag. Finally got a suggestion from a fellow member (thank you diesel911) to use a pourable mouldable urethane resin called flexane or devcon. Looked into it more and decided on the flexane 80. There are different numbers with 94 being the highest and least flex down to something like 64 with a lot of flex. I bought the smallest kit available which was the flexane 80 pourable one pound kit. Cost about 65 dollars and have a ton left over. Here is the process i took. This mount looks like new and works exactly like a new almost 300 dollar mount. For $65 investment and that will fix both sides with tons of the kit left i am very happy.
1. Removed the engine shock mount from vehicle.
2. Cleaned all old rubber from the metal mount with knife, etc and bring down to metal with steel wool
3. Once down to bare metal and no rubber left i cleaned metal with degreaser and brake clean.
4. Used digital scales to measure out the mixture of resin and hardener. Ratio is 77-23 or about 4:1. I used only 1 ounce resin to about .25 ounce Jet for one side or 2 ounce to half ounce for both sides.
5. Mixed for around 3 minutes and pour the urethane into the metal mount.
6. Used a hair dryer on low to blow on the resin for about 10 minutes to bring all air pockets to surface and out of the mould.
7. Let it set for at least 24 hours. Recommends 2 days in box butt seemed well hard enough to drill. Says is at 80 percent cure in 48 hours with max cure coming at 7 days...however if u want to speed the process it says you can cure for one day then cure for another day at 150 degrees (i used a toaster oven) for another 24 hours to achieve a full cure
8. Used a drill press to drill hole for the shock to come thru the mount.
9. Installed back on mercedes.

This was a very simple process and with only 70 total in materials for 2 mounts versus the around $550 for both sides to buy the mounts i am more than pleased. This resin is actually made for this type use and works very well. I did some research and found people making engine mounts for 1000 horsepower cars, making old impossible to find rubber mounts, etc. I hope this helps some people out and maybe save some hard earned cash to put towards other maintenance on these lovely machines.

What about the center sleeve? It sticks out proud on one side - did you just pour the flexane around it? Or did you ditch the oem metal sleeve?

I made a guide that hold the sleeve in the center and keeps the goo from flowing out.

Thumbs up Good Idea !

That's nice Carl ;

I've been sweating away deep inside the dashboard of my 240D and when looking for parts I found two brand new engine shocks and a pair of these upper shock mounts .

Oboy ! I hope they'll stop that final little bit of engine shake / vibration at hot idle .

Kobayashi - Are you filling the area above that white sleeve and then once that hardens removing the white sleeve and then filling in the rest?

Preador - YES!! This is exactly what I wanted to know. Unlike BMW where I can easily cross reference part numbers across chassis I can never seem to figure out what works with the mercs. In this case it is definitely a different part number and design but as long as it fits and does well to isolate the vibrations we are in business.

Since I already have BOTH shocks and I found a stray repair kit for the mount for 1 side only - would you be willing to part with one or both of your kits? Assuming you go the route of Preador and go with the SEL style mounts. If so - I'm a buyer!

Also - Did you find the mounts on MBclassic from this page? https://classicparts.mbusa.com/v-1991-mercedes-benz-350sdl--base--3-4l-l6-diesel/engine--engine-mounting
I don't see them listed so perhaps they are out of stock again.

The PN I have for them is: A1262410113 for just the mount or A1262400017 for the entire kit. Oddly If you type in the 0017 number into mbclassic it says it doesn't fit the 350sdl yet the everythingbenze ETK says it does...
