New personal record, 858 miles on one tank - '95 E300D

Yes, filled up just a few minutes ago. 857.7 miles on 22.12 gallons. 38.8 MPG. This tops my previous record which I posted here:

New personal record, 847 miles on this tank of fuel!

With the 90 liter tank (23.77 gallons) this means I had 1.65 gallons left, not a whole lot, but a decent reserve. As with my previous record tank, I did not start to drive conservatively until about 700 miles into the tank, I babied it for the last 158 miles, trying not to exceed 60 MPH on the highway and accelerating very slowly.

This is interesting because previous high mile tanks have always been during hot summer weather, and today it was about 58F on the morning commute and 70F on the way home (total for the last ~100 miles). I am pretty sure if I babied a whole tank I could easily reach the mythical 900 mile tank. (It used to be the mythical 800 mile tank, but I can do that almost any time).

All this, by the way, on what I firmly believe are the original injectors. I bought my car at 140K, I now have 363.6K. I have the previous two owners' records, and there are no injectors showing. I believe that I am due for injectors these days, as my starts are starting to get smoky. I think they are dribbling somewhat at start.

I'm not a hypermiler at all, but I track every single tank, and commute the same route, so I can tell when I have a "good" tank going.

Rgds,
Chris W.

Great Job !!

What speed do you average??

I have a 130 mile round trip daily, but I have been enjoying the shorter commute time with a heavy foot. 74 mph on the hwy, about 55 miles each way. I think I am just at 30mpg.

My commute is 110 miles round trip. According to my GPS, the actual average speed is around 45-48 MPH. Mostly highway except for two small towns at ~35 MPH and the last few miles also at a slow speed. But the highway part is 65-75 MPH depending on traffic, and I accelerate fairly hard to keep up with traffic - with the naturally aspro 606 you have to :-)

Chris W.

Impressive, I usually get 700 or so out of my 95 OM606, but I still have a little fuel leak at one of the return lines I have been neglecting to fix. Are you using any diesel additive, and how often do you use cruise control? I have a feeling I'll be able to surpass 800 with ease this summer when I fix the leak, probably closer to what you're getting if I go on a long road trip, but I tend to sit in a ton of traffic around here these days. I may give the cat the old drill treatment soon, it's probably getting a bit gummed up at 160k now.

Scary to think that amount of fuel will only take my 420 about 375 miles. Oh well.

Cool. Did all the US cars get bigger tanks then? My estate/wagon going from reserve light-to-light (usually around 60 litres) gets me 430-500 miles, depending on how heavy footed I am with a mix of town, primary routes (60mph) and highway (70mph)...

Mercedes put the big tank in the 1994 E300D so that they could brag it up in their advertising as having a "750 mile range." Chris is simply proving they were conservative. OTOH, think how much better his fuel economy ($$$/week) would be if he didn't have such a bloody long commute!

No additives. No cruise control either, it quit a couple years ago and I have never gotten around to fixing it. Every so often I think it would be real nice to have it working again, but then it wears off...

You should be able to make 800, not sure why you typically get only 700. Then again I don't know why some tanks of mine are significantly better than others.

Rgds,
Chris W.

PS, the 500E/E500 also got the 90 liter tank. AFAIK the '95 diesel and the 500 are the only ones.

I do better in the summer, it's been below 30f at night here seemingly from mid-December until now, with highs only being in the low 40's on average in that time frame. I bet the little fuel leak is affecting it more than I think, and I do tend to sit in a ton of traffic that brings the freeway to a crawl (I am a lead-foot too), couple that with the fact I usually just fill up at 700 well before the light is on, 800 seems possible to me. Still, it's very impressive you're getting those numbers out of car with 200k more miles than mine.

Keep on motoring.

If the lovely Mrs engatwork could keep her foot out of it she could probably do better than what she does.

Good job.

Very nice. I just got my 95 E300D and still working on my first tank. I'm going to fill it this weekend and see what kind of mileage I'm getting doing 50/50 driving. Great engines these OM606's.

yeah I just set a personal record today in my SD. My mixed driving yielded me 23.75 mpg. I read about this 27-33 mpg attainable but I have never seen close and I have tried.

My first tank of fuel was 32 mpg 50/50 city highwway. Not bad considering all the city driving and stop and go. Not bad.

Reminded me of a movie i watched long ago. One guy was boasting that he was getting 50 mpg to all his neighbors. The all of a sudden, his mileage went down to 10 MPG. Little did he know his neighbor was putting gas into his car, then the eighbor switched to taking gas out of the car. Well it was funny then,,,
