Climate control fan cutting out
I had a relatively long trip today (approx 100 miles) with the Air Conditioner on, no problems. After a short trip to the store, the fan would not turn on (it seemed as though the compressor engaged). A few minutes later, I tried the AC again and the fan (and compressor) turned on. The air blew cold, but this only lasted 5-10 minutes before the fan stopped again. Fan would not work regardless of fan speed selected. I know there is a lot on the climate control on this forum, but I'm hot and my brain is fried from doing taxes
Anyone able to point me in the right direction? Thanks, Andrew 1992 300d W124, approx 250K miles |

My guess is that your brushes are badly worn and your fan needs new brushes or resistance is building up and shorting out fan (another common problem) Check this site for how to remove fan motor and check/rebrush fan. Try directly powering your fan from the battery to see what happens - good luck!

Ingition Switch Contacts
Try rotating the key ever so slightly to see if the fan comes back on. Happens when switch contacts are wearing down.

Inspect the 30 amp metal strip fuse that is located in front of the main fuse box. They will crack through the center after awhile and cause the blower not to work.

Fan replacement
I had to replace my fan last year. It did the same thing. I took mine to a local shop that specializes in rebuilding electric motors. They also cleaned the squirrel cages on the ends of the motor. Go to the following URL which is in the DYI section of this forum. It took a bit of time but was pretty straight forward. If you have a little patience it is worth the time. Mine has been working great even since. I also bought a second one from a junkyard to have on hand for in the future and had it rebuilt. Rebuild cost me $50.00

Results
And the culprit was the strip fuse.
I opened the box up, saw it sagging with a potential crack down the middle. It disentigrated in my hand during removal. Two screws and 75 cents later I have AC! Thanks! |

Damn. My money was on the brushes. I didn't get final Jeopardy right tonight either.
