85 300D Valve Cover Issue and more
Just did a valve adjust on my om 617 turbo. No issues there.
What is the trick to getting the valve cover back on? It is making me crazy because this should be easy, it came off easy enough! Any pointers? Also, I broke a line. It is a hard vac line leading to what I think is a banjo bolt on the back of the intake manifold. did I really snap something or is the attached with a rubber connector type thing like many of the other vac lines? I hoping maybe I just popped off the rubber piece and can use another to connect this line back up. I know it is an important connection having to do with turbo boost. Thanks Much All

It's a lot easier if you move the cruise control actuator out of the way.

The cover has to be started at about 30 degrees or so with the top aimed towards the driver fender. Make sure all lines ect are clear and that your gasket is firmly seated on the cover. Seems like a slight rocking, fender to fender, allows the cover to slide on down. It isnt a matter of force but more persistence.
I havent found any of the hard plastic lines that dont connect into a rubber sleeve type connector.

You snapped the Tecalan line that is a pressure line from the intake manifold to the overboost protection valve. The line suffers from the high heat and the plastic becomes brittle over time. You need to purchase a new line which includes the attached banjo fitting. Don't try to rig up a rubber vacuum hose in that location. |

Thanks folks. Now I remember that dance with the VC to get it on. Been a few years since I had a W123 to work on and old age is making everything slip away. Moving the damn CC activator too.
Brian, I will order the part if I can find it. I can see how rubber just wouldn't work back there, lot of heat I was surprised at the valve adjustment. I hadn't done it on this car yet and put some 20K miles on it. This is my first brush at maintenance except for oil, air and fuel filters. Virtually every valve was tight but only by a little. I did the GP's yesterday. This is my daily driver now that the summer is back. Thanks again folks, mad old man will find peace now :-)

Brian, thanks very much for that. I'm putting together an order to peachparts for this and misc other stuff for the MB and a Volvo I own. The part is cheap, about 16.00 but with 28.00 shipping. It's pretty easy to spend 100.00 to get the shipping break. Cover's going back on today I hope.
