Thinking of buying a 300T, but no SLS system?!
The seller of a car posted this video for me showing off a cold start and drive in a car that I'm considering buying. But there's no SLS pump? It's a euro 300T, no turbo, powerless windows, no sunroof, no automatic antenna, which is all very lovely to me.
But I didn't see an SLS pump, so either it's an engine that replaced the original and they did something interesting to the rear suspension, or it's a wagon that never had SLS, which I've never heard of. I haven't negotiated a price yet, but does this look worthwhile?

All T-models must have a SLS.
T-model with rear suspension from sedan - is a bad idea. |

Duo-pump The power steering pump also serves as the SLS pump, resp. it's a combined unit
[edit] If 300T means 300TE resp. a gasser with the M103 six-cylinder... |

The car is being sold as a 300 series non-turbo wagon. There are no badges and no holes for badges on the rear hatch. The asking price is a bit high, $4k, and apparently it requires double clutching or a 'pause' when shifting from 1st to 2nd, shifts through all other gears normally, and downshifts through all gears including 2nd just fine. Sounds like a bad syncro or shift fork to me.
There is no rust on the body except the edges of the doors under the trim. Hatch is in good repair, has euro hvac system, it doesn't appear to have an AC compressor in the engine, so I'm going to assume it's without. Car has about 300,000 miles, at least that is what is claimed. Seems like it might be true. Lots of pictures at high resolution here.

I've had and done quite a bit of work on a wagon already, this would be a replacement for it. Always wanted one with manual windows, manual transmission and simple hvac.
Oh, central locks work when the car is freshly turned off and locked. After sitting a while the central locks won't work until the car is turned on. So there is a leak in the vacuum system somewhere, or the bubble thing behind the bumper that stores vacuum is kaput.

There is an hydraulic reservoir on the left, the round yellow thingie with the line that goes to the rear of the engine compartment. I still see no evidence of a pump, the power steering unit looks pretty much the same to me, but I am probably missing something. The tank you identified on the right is for the window washer, and I can't find the coolant expansion tank, which is also quite bizarre.

Aha - that clears things up a bit Wild guess: there's a sedan engine or cylinder head fitted to that wagon and the SLS got 'deleted'...
Ignore my previous comment, I was thinking W124. God knows why... ;D |

Oh my. Nice that it's a new engine, but I haven't heard anybody say anything nice about an sls delete who has actually done it.

It's looking more and more like it might be a pass. He's asking $4k, and the body is in incredible shape, but there are a few things that don't quite add up for me. Somebody please tell me I'm wrong.

It hasn't a coolant expansion tank from factory.

I don't dispute that, but this is the first time that I've seen a car that doesn't have one. Other old vws of course.

I've actually just finishe taking apart a 1980 300 wagon with the NA motor, and that one definitely had the sls pump on the head, and a coolant expansion tank. It was an automatic. Which is also funny, because the car listed has the vacuum switches on the valve cover that only go on slush boxes. I'm pretty much talked out of it, but it on eBay if anybody else wants it.

Well, if all parts of the SLS are still present, I'd guess making a dual pump from a W124 fit would be the easyest option.
OM61Xs for use with SLS (sedan or wagon) have a different head with provision for the SLS pump. OM61Xs for cars without SLS - don't have that provision. Putting a non-SLS engine into a car with SLS can work, two options: either swap the head or fit a dual-pump (not a straight swap of course)... |
