Fan Clutch Question

I acquired the eleven blade plastic fan, and the oe clutch from a '98 E300 to install on my OM603. I don't know the condition of the clutch- the car had 80k miles. I figured I would install it and evaluate it's performance before I try to introduce new fluid, or replace it.

My question: The bi-metal spring does not seem to be hel in place all that well- It is easy enough to slide it to one side, and then lift it out. Is something missing? it seems like it would be a probable occurance to have it simply fall off at some point. The clutch is a Horton, and has the MB star. It doesn't appear to be missing any components.

Thanks!

The BEHR clutches have the BMS like that - slide under two sections but also has a dab of RTV on each end to ensure the BMS does not fly out.

You can also use a drop of RTV on this one it wouldnt hurt.

I've been thinking that I should just buy a new clutch and be done. The clutches I see widely available are ACM, Beck-Arnley and Sachs. My inclination is to assume the Sachs is probably the best of the bunch, but the ACM's much cheaper and I'm counting my pennies these days. Any opinions on the ACM clutch?

FWIW....

I opted for a new fan clutch. I purchased the Sachs clutch from Pelican Parts, delivered in 3 days. I purchased the Sachs based on my own personal expectation that the Euro manufactured Sachs part would be a better product than the others I found, made in the Far East.

I opened the box on receipt and found the clutch to be marked "Horton" and "Made in Germany." Horton is the OE supplier, so I'm a happy guy!

i see there are different part numbers for the fan clutch of non-turbo '96 '97 w210 606 engine, and for the '98 '99 turbo 606. the former has a part number that begins with 603, and the latter has a p/n beginning with 606.

does anyone know what the difference is between these two clutches? and if they are interchangeable?

$156. I found ACM brand for under $100, but when you value the reliability factor inherent in a diesel MB, why buy substandard parts?

I have found that Pelican Parts are very good at carrying top-quality parts, where many of the other suppliers occasionally have good stuff sprinkled among the far eastern parts.

Can't wait to get this installed and have a working clutch again!

Do a thorough subject search here. As I recall, there is a difference between these units- I assume it has to do with calibration more than whether or not it will fit.

Roy - on this forum confirmed that all 606 engine fan clutches have been superseded to the later part no. The old 9 blade fan also has been updated from the narrow blade fan to the wider blade fan (similar to a BMW fan) - This combination provides maximum low rpm cooling and decouples quickly at high rpm. The later fan clutch is also thicker - hence holds a little more fluid and has a fighting chance against overheating the silicone fluid.

My car also has the 603 part no with the old narrow blade fan - its original with MB star with BEHR brand (but its refilled and working perfectly for me) - Its a pain to get it exactly correct unless you like R&D work like me.

I tried a 606 200 0023 (OE on '93 SD?) thick 9-blade fan unit in an '87 300D. It fits but renders the 2-piece shroud pointless since it sits closer to the radiator. On one hand you want maximum cooling effectiveness; on the other, you want to be able to replace the serpentine belt on the side of the road. The '98-99 fan in an '87 300D requires trimming the blades or the turbo air inlet tube. Hopefully that means the fan sits far enough aft to allow the 2-piece shroud to function as a 2-piece shroud.

you mean that the front piece of the shroud does not slip past the fan??

The front piece is fine. The aft piece is thicker and the tabs will bend the radiator fins if you force it.

anytime I install the shroud I go this way

ring
fan
front shroud

I cannot get the ring past the radiator with fan installed.
