"Engine rebuilt" in the context of a used Mercedes diesel for sale is a meaningless throwaway term that says nothing without specifics on who did it and what exactly was done.
If the car is REALLY that nice it ought to have records. People don't casually toss receipts for major work like motor and tranny overhauls. You have uploaded one pic, of the interior. Mercedes interiors are very durable and are not generally as solid an indicator of overall condition as with many other makes, including other German cars. Is it just me or are those not the right seats? I don't know a lot about w124s but is it normal they are so badly faded in comparison with the rest of the interior?

That is odd. I have two of these cars and no seat fading whatsoever.

Yeah, the rebuild is fishy. I really have nothing to go on, and I was able to get the price down a bit because of that, as the current owner bought it from the man who had the rebuild done, who provided no receipts.
According to the CarFax however, MB of Princeton did a major service 50k ago. It's inconclusive as to whether this was the "rebuild" in question, but at least that, coupled with the engine's good health (good compression, good power, no immediately detectable blow-by) are positive evidence. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and see if they have any records for the VIN. Caught my eye as well, but since the picture was taken with a flash the foreground is just blown out. Upon physical inspection they seem completely normal. They're just garden variety MB-Tex as far as I can tell: MB or leather ? |
