300D died

Coming home the other day I had a odd smell in the car, almost like a catalytic convert smell from a gas engine but not as strong and not quite like it, but close. When I got home and went to park the engine died, it re-started OK. Next day it started and I went to back out and had to go back in the house, when I opened the door it died again, it started an I pulled forward to park and it died and would not start again Any suggestions Thanks G Cole
