300D died

1090 300D 124.128

Coming home the other day I had a odd smell in the car, almost like a catalytic convert smell from a gas engine but not as strong and not quite like it, but close.
When I got home and went to park the engine died, it re-started OK.
Next day it started and I went to back out and had to go back in the house, when I opened the door it died again, it started an I pulled forward to park and it died and would not start again
Any suggestions
Thanks
G Cole

Man that car is over 900 years old. Mercedes Benz didn't think it would go near that far. Do you have enough fuel in it? When did you last change a fuel filter on it? Sounds like a fuel problem.

Making sure you are getting Fuel is the first step.

I have never read anything concerning smell unles the Headgasket went bad and you were smelling Coolant.

Another thing that could stop you and might smell is if the exhaust system is plugged up.

That would include a Trap Oxidizer of other emissions device in the exhaust system.

Burned Wires can smell pretty bad. Might look under the Hood and down under near the Neutral Safety Switch.

If you are keen to your car you can smell the freon that escapes out of a bad evaporator on a w124 car (and I imagine anyone where the evap starts leaking). You will only smell it for a couple/few days.

If you're alone, pull the vacuum line off the shutoff actuator on the IP and see if it starts.

I don't think .128s have a cat. Unless a cat crawled into the muffler

My '93 SD didn't have a cat. IIRC 350SD/Ls don't have cats either.
