Question 87 SDL at 97000 mi - need expert advice

This 87SDL is at 97K miles so I figure at 100K I need:
* XMission service
* Timing chain/tensioner
* AC system flush (? - want to be careful - I'm in Texas)
* (what else)?

I use:
* Mobil1 15/50
* Texaco premium low sulfer diesel

But here's my REAL question. Ever since trap oxidizer removal, it smokes too much for my liking when accelerating past 3000 RPM (grey smoke). It starts/runs/idles smoothly and there's no oil consumption or coolant leak prob.

Have tried:
* Techron
* GK40
* K&N air filter

I want this car run as cleanly as it possibly can. I've heard that new injectors always help at this age

Any suggestions for unusual but documented exhaust arrangements, intake arrangements, additives, timing/injection arrangements, etc. are appreciated.

Thank you.

You don't have to worry about a chain or tensioner yet, check back with us at 250K.

Get off the Mobil 1. That is for gasoline engines, if you want a synthetic oil, use Mobil Delvac 1. The regular M1 does not have the soot control properties and other additives your diesel needs.

Definately change the tranny fluid and filter, and change the two fuel filters.

I agree - no need to worry about the timing chain this early.

Regarding the oil, I believe you are fine with Mobil1. The cost/value equation does not make sense for me with Delvac 1. While it is true that it suspends contaminants better than M1, those contaminants are still in the engine. As such, I prefer to continue changing my oil at the regular 2500-3000k mi intervals.

Timing chain? Well I'm at 276,000 and to the best of my knowledge it's the original chain. I might think about it after I hit 300,000 miles.

It seemed like after 6 months of using Redline fuel treatment, the smoke almost went away. 7 months ago I use to have no problems "clouding the tailgaters." It just doesn't do that any more.

As far as oil: It was on Valvoline 15-40. I switch to Delo 15-40 for convinence (Costco sell it). Oil & Filter every 2,500, religiously.

I installed the K&N airfilter when I first got the car so I didn't have date to compare before/after. At 70 mph (sea level) I do about 30. The best I've seen was 32mpg after a long country highway 45-50mph trip.

The K&N on my 94 Suburban change 13.5 mpg highway to 17mpg highway. (I'd add a smile here if I knew how).

turbodiesel,

Have you change your voltage regulator? Mine just when out at 275,000. Brushes on the cabin heater fan also when out a few months ago.

Hey DZLPWR (great name, would make a good licence plate too )

My blower motor went out about 3,000 miles ago, I got a new motor and put it in there, the brushes were worn on the old one.

My alternator is starting to make the slighest hint of a squeeling noise now, check back with me in a few thousand miles

Seems like our cars are aging at the same rate as well.
