CT diesel emission test
yes it's true! here in ct they actually test diesels along with gas engine cars. Any car 24yrs or newer. So, the sticker is expired and
today i go for the test. Finally after about 1/2 hour of idling in line it get's tested + Flunks!!! So, i say to the attendent "no way this car could flunk , test it again!" They must have been in a good mood or couldn't believe the reading themselves either cause they agreed to do the test over and sure enuf, she passed! Moral of the story to all u guys in ct - if ya flunk try to get tested again rite there on the spot. I suspect maybe the equipment was bad. It is an opacity test and the first reading showed 68.0 and the 2nd one showed 11.8 . Anything below 20.0 is a pass. Anybody else out there in other states/countries have an emission test for diesels a/o experiences to share?

When did CT start that?? We had an '81 300SD there from '86 to '92, and they just gave us an "Exempt" sticker which was good for 5 years - done deal. My in-laws still live there and drive a '92 300D - I could have sworn they also had an "Exempt" sticker..

I need to go get my car inspected (Mass. Law)
I found Sunoco who'd do it for $20.. I wonder if anyone knows a cheaper place around Boston.. I hope it passes everything cuz it does have a previous MA inspection sticker

Yes diesels were once exempt in Ct but they found out they could make an easy $20 by starting testing...

Yes, Oregon just started it within the last year or so.
I can't recall if they looked under the hood. I've always wondered if those inspectors could tell difference between an original 78 300CD diesel engine, to the one that www.badbenz.com has under the hood of his 6.3 liter coupe. Mine passed first try (this time). 87' 300SDL 270k |

84300DT,
I posted the results on my daughter's 1982 240D with 280,000 miles, which was 0.1 of the allowed 20% value. I did not witness the test because, like you I thought the car was exempt from the test, although I think I used to have to pay the fee to get the exempt sticker. Anyway it was overdue by about 3 years and we got a letter from the CT DMV saying the registration was being revoked due to the lack of testing if we did not get it done by the end of February. My wife took the car over and she says they tried it a few times because they could not believe the results either. The car does not smoke at idle, only at start up for a few seconds, but it has good throttle response and can stay at 75 up the hills on I-90 throught the Berkshires on the way to Upstate NY. I was wondering if you saw them do the test? Did they use the dyno and run it at 25 or so mph? My wife did not pay much attention as she was blocked by the building arrangement. Jim

The Connecticut emissions test is conducted at speed.
The rear tires are driven over rollers and then driven up to about the 25-30 mph you mentioned. The car is run on the test stand for about one minute and the results are recorded over the next minute ( at least that's what I was told by the attendant). And yes diesels were exempted until '95 or so when our money hungry state figured to pick up a few extra bucks. ( Connecticut Legislators never met a tax they didn't like). However they did do a decent thing in exempting diesel trucks over a certain weight. |

yes concur, test is done at speed on a dyno - the car seemed to nearly jump out of it with the usual 'hard' shift from 2nd to third - it made the attendent jump a bit too!! I witnessed the test and they seemed really not to know what they were doing...
anyhow the sticker is good for 2yrs so this mb will not be seeing 'em again until then!

Ohio tests in only certain "populous" counties---and Cuyahoga County fits the bill. I passed with a 4.0---they also use 20 as the benchmark. Cars, including diesels, are exemot when hit the age of 25.
